Much like Joe I think DL could offer him something fair without having to outbid other teams. Maybe DL looks for another pg project to groom behind Ricky if Exum becomes to costly.

I'm always confused on how these things work, but I think the Jazz can extend him using their cap-space in 2018 (if they have any). So they pay him more money in 2018-2019 as a way to make his future contract not as expensive.

Like if they wanted to sign him to a 4 year, 80 million dollar deal, they could pay him a certain portion of that in the last year of his current deal.

He's the exact type of guy who will leave money on the table to sign with the team he wants.

He seems really happy in Utah and has improved significantly via the Utah Jazz reclamation project. I'm hopeful he'll keep this level of play and be signed to a fair albeit reasonable contract.

I want Ricky Rubio to retire in a Jazz uniform. He's our PG of the future. I'd rather throw money at home for 4 years than keep hoping Exum turns into whatever we expect.

Exum feels more Burks than Mitchell right now. Just not sure there's as much upside as people want to think. Yeah, he's fast and he can hit layups... but Mitchell's accelerated development might have pushed us right past the "developing raw guys" stage. I'd love to think our window is starting to crack open now. That over the next 4-5 years we can have our most productive since the Statue days.

And another thing to keep in mind is chemistry. It's extremely clear to me that Rubio has endeared himself to Mitchell and Ingles specifically. You can't buy that.

Please don't compare Exum to Burks. Exum can play both ends of the floor and has a much higher BB IQ than Burks, which means Quin can mold him into a very good backup guard.

Yeah, even a great guard duo like Mitchell and Rubio could use a bit of backup help from the bench. We need players like Exum (and O'Neale) on this team.

Dante was terrible last night. Which is perfect. Best case scenario is for the Jazz to sign him for cheap and then have him realize his potential.

That being said, Ricky is the point guard of the future for the Jazz!

The Jazz can pretty do that. More or less, it's a front-loaded contract, like Ingles got. It's a good idea because it would lessen his impact by the time we got around to extending DM.

I kind of assumed Utah was going to re-sign Rubio after he developed a jump shot. If Ricky is happy, the FO and coaching staff are on board, and it's doable, then I'd try to extend him. I think what Ricky wanted most out of the T-wolves trade was simply to go someplace where he could be happy, ball, and get respect.

I think the biggest factor in Rubio's improvement, of all factors, is that Quin believed in him, and that gave him the confidence to bring in Lopez to help him work on his game. This confidence spilled over into his shooting, and you know how it is when you believe you can't miss a shot -- invariably more go in than you normally would make. So, Quin should get a lot of credit. Another reason he should be in the running for COY.

What Covington did is not front-loading.

We won't have the space to do the re-sign strategy Covington got... or the one we were going to do with Hill. It would mean letting Favs walk, waiving Thabo and Udoh, and either trading AB for no money or stretching him. Could also let Exum walk... but getting to cap space is difficult and the cost outweighs the benefit.

We could do an extension as he is eligible, but I think it'd have to be built off of his $15M salary for next year. If we are planning on keeping him and signing someone in 2019 then getting him on an extension at anything less than $22M (his cap hold) will create space. If we are planning on max space I don't see us signing him and Exum to new contracts... if we do then it is likely Exum or Crowder are moved for space in 2019.

I don't know what his value is on the market, because I think a team would be worried they can make him work like we have. Look at what has happened to Hill since leaving. More teams will have space, but not many teams have an open starting spot.

So if Ricky is so happy he extends his deal at a decent discount I think we could/should do something... if not keep the flexibility and order the signings to maximize space in 2019. There are also potential injury concerns that letting him play out the current deal helps to alleviate. I don't think he's injury prone, but it can happen to anyone.
