I'm always confused on how these things work, but I think the Jazz can extend him using their cap-space in 2018 (if they have any). So they pay him more money in 2018-2019 as a way to make his future contract not as expensive.Much like Joe I think DL could offer him something fair without having to outbid other teams. Maybe DL looks for another pg project to groom behind Ricky if Exum becomes to costly.
Like if they wanted to sign him to a 4 year, 80 million dollar deal, they could pay him a certain portion of that in the last year of his current deal.
Like the Sixers did with Covington: https://www.sbnation.com/nba/2017/11/15/16658798/robert-covington-extension-sixers-contract
I'm not sure how that works exactly tho. Can the Jazz go past the cap to do that as long as they dont go past the LT? Or can they only do that if they have cap-space?
