The official "let's impeach Trump" thread

What would really heal the country is for the Republican Party members that supported "The Big Lie" about the election denouncing it. If enough donors continue to pull out, they might be forced to do so. The Trump Republican Party is the cause of the rift in the country, and they need to fix it. Until they do, Trump is always going to be a martyr to his supporters because of the so-called stolen election. Then again, maybe time really does heal all wounds. It just might get better on its own if Biden does a good job on the COVID crisis and economic recovery, and perhaps just the removal of Trump from the picture will break the weird hold he has on too many people. It took Republican leadership denouncing Nixon to begin to heal the country from the Watergate scandal, and perhaps being convicted by the Senate with help from Republican senators might be just what the doctor ordered.

So basically I have no idea what the best way to move forward would be, but I cannot wait until January 20 is over.

Don’t hold your breath. Obama did a great job of leasing the country out of the abyss and look at how the GOP treated him. I predict the GOP will return to its most effective position, being obstructionist, spreading conspiracy and fear, while pretending to care about deficits. I wish you were right. But it’s just a lot easier to be a Monday morning QB, criticize the Democrats, and retake power in the next election solely off criticism. And as we’ve seen, we have no shortage of morons in this country. Republicans don’t need to have a platform. They don’t need any ideas. They just need to brainwash a few thousand more people in key states to hate and fear fellow Americans.

I suspect we’re gonna see a lot of this type of stuff for the next 4 years:

During an appearance on Newsmax Wednesday evening, Greene, a vocal supporter of President Trump, said that she is planning on introducing a measure to impeach Biden on Jan. 21, one day after his inauguration.

"I would like to announce on behalf of the American people, we have to make sure our leaders are held accountable, we cannot have a President of the United States who is willing to abuse the power of the office of the presidency and be easily bought off by foreign governments, foreign Chinese energy companies, Ukrainian energy companies, so on January 21, I will be filing articles of impeachment on Joe Biden," Greene told Newsmax's Greg Kelly.

That's incorrect. At least, it's certainly not "clear". Most experts I've heard/read feel like it would be permissible.
Yes, I have not seen that claim made anywhere other than the article I posted. I do believe I would surely have run across it elsewhere, in print, or the television pundits....at first blush, it may seem strange to try someone who has already left office. But, if it means barring him from future office, makes all the sense in the world to proceed with an impeachment trial...

I agree but it is not surprising that people like her are elected. When the GOP decided to let the crazy Tea Party into government, it open the door for crazy people like her. This has little chance of moving forward but it is just more nonsense the everyday leaders have to deal with. Personally, I think a law is needed to vet candidates on a standard instead of allowing the party to do the back ground checks. I think that if you are a member of the KKK, QAon , or a militia you cannot hold office. Throw in a test of civics, history, economics, foreign policy should be required and complete financial exposure of personal and financial records, proof of citizenship, and lastly some type of personality/mental health test. I know this is a pipe dream but this woman is unfit to be a representative. They should suspend her or kick her out for being a nut.

He is going to be the first president to be impeached twice! The article will be introduced on Monday and voted on on Wednesday. It's virtually a lock to pass, IMO. The senate won't take it up until 1/20. This is because the senate is in "pro-forma" session until the inauguration. And while McConnel can call for a session to take up the article, it takes only 1 GOP senator to veto the call for a senate session while in "pro-forma". So, the new Schumer-led senate will have to take it up. And why should they take it up after Trump is gone? Because there is still a good chance for conviction (2/3's of senators *present* to convict), and if convicted, it only takes a simple majority senate vote to prevent Trump from ever holding public office again. That makes it worth it.
Mitch is doing this because he can come back and say, I did impeach and convict the president it was those vile democrats again. Then he will start campaigning the Hope in American will all but disappear and we will have four more years of the right acting even more crazy. Ugh....

I didn’t want to create a new thread for this but what do you think Trump has done to the pro life movement @colton? I’ve always seen the pro life movement to be a front for Republicans to beat up Democrats to win elections and/or for misogynistic and fundamentalist voters to enforce their extremist views onto people.

The conservative movement in the mid 1970s recognized the power that abortion could have in tying together both evangelicals and Catholics to create a monster voting bloc that would support their true agenda of tearing down the New Deal and diverting funds to (white) charters and religious private schools. In my experience, I’ve found very very few people who claim to be pro life actually support “pro life” measures such as educational, financial, and medical support to young mothers and children. Sadly, I’ve seen the pro life movement to be mostly anti choice. primarily aimed at bringing the culture of the 1950s back. However, up until Trump, I think pro life Republicans could always hide behind the veneer of being “pro life.” But they can’t hide anymore. Clearly, they don’t give a damn about the common principles they claimed they had fiscal responsibility, character, freedom, or life. As former Republican strategist and one of the founders of the Lincoln Project wrote, “It was all just a lie.” Trump has exposed the pro life movement. They clearly don’t care about life. Not a peep has been made over the last 4 years from them as Trump and his administration and supporters have run roughshod over life.

Now that you’ve seen 4 years of Trump being supported in no small part by pro lifers, has your view on this movement changed? How can one claim to be pro life and support Trump, whose policies on immigration, health care, foreign policy, etc are some of the most destructive we’ve ever seen?

I’m pro choice and pro life. I’m for women having a choice. I don’t think government should choose the health care for women. I’m pro life because I believe in comprehensive sex education. I believe contraception should be accessible to everyone. Women’s hygiene and health care products shouldn’t be taxed. Programs like CHIP should be funded adequately. Health care should be universal. And children shouldn’t be tortured, imprisoned, and separated at the border.

just curious if your views on this movement have changed?

Some interesting rumblings that McConnell isn't against convicting Trump and banning him from holding further office... even though he won't allow the senate trial before Biden takes office. Will be interesting to see how the Senate trial goes.
The House should draft articles of impeachment against Mitch McConnell for deriliction of duties and send them over to the incoming majority.

It's time for him to go anyway. Drain the swamp.

Trump's trial is set to begin Feb 9. Hope he is convicted and then barred from holding office in the future.
Grumblings are that he likely will be. Too bad it doesn't come with prison time.

Nice job GOP. You should be proud putting this person in office and giving her committees to serve on

Remember when Al Franken resigned over some joke and Katie Hill resigned over revenge porn? Good times. And this woman gets put on committees by Republican leadership?

Both parties are the same, Amiright?
