I see where the counter argument comes from. I disagree because I don't think the following are consistent:
  • Losing $16 mil and $3.9 mil in 2011 & 12 To put this in Perspective, only Brooklyn is slated to lose money this year. (-5.7 mil)
  • Throwing away $1 mil by waiving grant Jerrett to make a bottom of the roster addition that has yielded Jeff Withey who only had 200k guaranteed at the time.
  • Occasionally drafting non-consensus players such as Lyles and Hayward.
  • Purchasing a D-league team in Idaho. (not supposed to be a great business venture.)
If the Jazz weren't making money this thread would be about why the Miller's don't care and will be shipping the team to Vegas.

When have The Jazz ever made significant gains at the trade deadline?

The last net positive I can remember is trading Stevenson for Giricek and getting Gugliotta and The Knick pick (Hayward) in a salary dump by Phoenix. LOL - the latter of which was required to come up to the payroll minimum.

My guess is their "gains" will be getting back Burks and (maybe) Favors for the "playoffs push".
 
Sports is always at least 90% misery. The Patriots and Spurs have been the outliers, having pushed that percentage all the way back to around 70%. Helmet catches and Ray Allen 3-pointers are still deep scars, even though they are surrounded by mirth. The Jazz have been able to push that percentage above 95% -- mostly by deftly capitalizing on a luck-filled run to the WCF almost 10 years ago. Milk that, mmmm, cuz we all still believe enough. Teats aint dry yet.

I agree with this! Kirilenko played the All-Star game that year....Hayward or Favors had the chance to be selected this season but they didn't take the opportunity.
 
The Death Knell might have come when the Millers decided to expand in every direction within the "Entertainment" sector. They're getting a good slice of the local dollars spent, whether you're going to the games or maybe not even invested in the jazz in any way. This has gotten to lessen the oomph to put more into the Jazz, on every scale. Maybe they'll find that oomph in a specific passion for basketball, and get the right people in here, and maybe they won't. It also means our ownership is so owned by cars and Entertainment, that slumps in the economy will hit them harder than most.

Just thoughts. Pessimistic ones.

I've pointed this out a few times and get called out for either being negative or a drama queen. Jazz have been 28th for two straight seasons. But to add some quality vets would be 'skipping steps' I'm told.

That's DL ********. Spurs developed Kawhi just fine, as did GS with Draymond. Others integrate young players. You don't have to continue losing to develop quality players. Now yes, if you want to develop DLeaguers into fringe NBA players, then by all means bring in guys like Millsap, Johnson, Ingles, etc. and give them minutes. Because the development of those guys is CRITICAL to competing in the playoffs (sarcasm alert).

The Millers always cared more about the bottom line. Larry H said a couple of times the primary goal was to always operate in the black. I don't see anything different under Greggy and now the Board.

DL is scared off by " overpaying." He bargain hunts. Well, that's a terrific strategy if you want to continue to sign the Bookers and Witheys of the league: decent subs, but won't lift the team to the next level. Even ultra conservative KOC did a better job by signing Boozer, Memo and trading up on draft day for DWill.
 
Interesting how in a team like the Hornets a player earning $4m per year probably makes more in a year than the team's owner.
