Huge problem with this whole exercise is that the draft is before free agency. Utah is not traditionally big free agent destination. I don't really see any huge FAs lining up to sign with us, especially not the type of FAs at the skill-level of Favors or even close to his level. So in fact what you'd be doing is - trading Favors for a pick, before you can get his replacement in FA and before knowing if you can even get a Trevor Booker type replacement. It also sends a message to our other players and Gordon specifically - "oh, you think you have something special with that cute defense thing? You think you are close to contending and chasing playoffs? Well think again, Favors is gone, and you get this 19 year old kid, good luck with that."
I think hitting the reset button once again before we've even tried to explore how this new elite defense is going to pan out, to a huge extent dooms us to a perpetual rebuild... How good should the new 19 year old become before we decide to commit to getting better and getting into contention? Or will he become at about Favors level/or bust and then decide Hayward is not enough and send him on his way either in free agency(because he's tired of losing) or for another draft pick? Then who's the next one on the line? Rudy? At some point we have to draw the line and say - this is our core and we commit to improving the team around it. The second part of last season gave us hope that the time is now and that we have the beginning of something special, so I don't really want to hit the reset button now. I don't see any point in it.
Great post. Only part I disagree with is the near all star level remark. To trade Favors I'd need a bona fide all star or better player.Since Utah isn't a free agency destination, the Jazz usually have to overpay to get a guy to come here (Boozer) or pickup a value free agent and have him outplay his contract (Carroll and Booker).
The Jazz can't count on anything from free agency. Losing Favors for anything less than a near All Star PF would hurt the team's development. I think he's a part of the Core players the Jazz want to build around. Let the Sixers perpetually tank. I think the Jazz should draft the best player they can get, maybe chase a free agent or two (nobody who disrupts team chemistry) and then see where they're at when they've got their Core guys all under contract and $20+ million of cap space and a TON of assets to go after that "missing piece" player to compliment the group we have or push them to a higher level.
Yep, we have seen Gobert play with Favors for a good half a season. Even if they were playing all time great defense together, that **** gets old after about a month. Seriously, only morons like watching soul crushing defense. We need some Antawn Jamison like dude launching it from deep up in here. It would really be cool if we got a rookie had to develop him for three years just to get to a vintage "Twannnn" level.
What quality free agent will come here without a starting gig available? We can use our space on other stuff I get it but it will be lower level depth...
Here are the questions to consider... How many games would replacing favors with millsap cost us next year? Would we win more or less? Assume both players are healthy. Would that be a sixers move?
I agree. There are a lot of caveats to saying yes, but this idea that Favors is untradable because he has a nice contract (for now) and "likes it here" is about the biggest loser **** I have ever read on this site.
I agree. Good postWe could clear up cap space to get a player either way. That has nothing to do with the trade. The trade is #4 pick for Favors. That is a bad trade.
Favors is a borderline all star player who is getting better every year. #4 pick is a crap shoot. Maybe if we were starting over with the rebuild then fine, get rid of older players and try your luck in the draft but we are not. We are a team hoping to make the playoffs with good young players.
