The Trey Burke Thread

Trey can't get into the paint. And, he'll never be a lockdown defender. Unless he can become faster with his pass AND a knockdown 3-pnt shooter, then he's a bust. Simple.

Trey was struggling with very simple offense last night. He couldn't even use a screen well enough to create flaws in the defense.

(BTW, Garry Harris scored 30 last night. I'd be shocked if we couldn't have traded Trey for a pick that would've nabbed that guy. 3&D all day and night. ****.)

Agree
I love it when people say Trey is "clutch." Based off one game-winning shot? Sundiata Gaines was clutch, too. He went on to be a solid NBA starting PG. Oh wait...

Trey is short and slow. He can't penetrate. He's not a good defender. And he's a horrible shooter. Wait, but he finished SECOND in ROY voting. Yep. In what may have been one of the weakest drafts ever. Wish Jazz had taken Giannis, but I can't take credit for being on that bandwagon. At least Utah got the sleeper of the draft in Gobert.

I keep reading people say he can't penetrate, but see video after video of him doing just that.

I like Trey Burke a lot. I think he's a solid player who wants to work hard, lead his team and WIN. He's athletic enough to play, but not to really stand out. All in all, a good but not great player.

I think that Dante Exum's future is at PG, and that he will be great. All Star level type talent, possibly more. He's the type of player that you build around. If the Jazz play Hayward at the 3 most of the time, then the question becomes " which lineup has the most potential - Burks and Exum or Exum and Burke?" For me, I think Burks and Exum will be a damn fine back-court.

Because of that, I'm hoping that by the All-Star break, Exum is the starting PG and Trey Burke is killing backups as the leader of the second team. I think that he can potentially be very good running that. I'm in favor if keeping both for a good while.

OK, maybe I should amend that to say he can't penetrate and finish. When he does drive, there is a very minute chance of getting to the basket. And he just doesn't draw contact...ever. What good does it do to be 90% on your FT's if you only shoot 1.5 per game (and some of those would be illegal "D" FT's). Video HIGHLIGHTS will show everything. Heck, just because I dunked ONCE and every highlight video has that play on it, doesn't make me a high-flyer. Highlight videos will show a couple of blocks Trey made, but that doesn't mean he's Dikembe Mutombo.

Burke shot the ball 897 times last season. His shooting percentage was 38%/33%. That is not good. That is not "CLUTCH." That is HORRIBLE. Sure, he likely had a few decent games. But for the ONE game he managed to hit a game winner, there were MANY more when his abysmal shooting contributed to the game being far out of reach by the 4th quarter.

At least two-thirds of teams have better starting PG's than Trey. And a bunch have two or even three better PG's on their rosters. I have little hope for Ice Cold Trey outside of being a deal sweetener. It was a wasted pick. Lottery picks HAVE to bring starting-quality/6th men type players. Trey could be a decent backup, nothing more. And for a #9 pick, especially for a franchise that can't get even second-tier FA's to sign with them, a whiff on a top-10 pick is costly. Fortunately, Lindsey hit a HR with Gobert. Rudy is going to be a helluva back up, maybe even a starter some day.

I need people to watch some of these highlights of Chris Paul and show me where he's just getting to the paint on iso's. He's using the PNR and he's putting pressure on the defense with his pace and decision making. It's his skills coupled with his BBIQ that that makes him the best @ his position. Not godly like quickness and explosiveness.

In contrast look at Jeff Teague. This is a guy with great quickness and explosiveness. Notice he kills in iso's and the seperation he creates as opposed to Chris Paul. Yet who would you rather have as your PG Paul or Teague?

He got into the paint on Iso's with the Hornets, In LA hes just needed to be a floor general, Blake gets the lion's share of shots. Jamal Crawford is there for Iso's.

Chris Paul is going to make the Hall of Fame. you are crazy. Kobe stole his MVP in 07-08.

Trey Burke blocking a 5'11 guard is not as impressive as Chris Paul dunking on a young Dwight Howard, sorry.

Paul changes speeds much better than Trey. He has better handles. And is an infinitely greater threat to pass.

What's your point? That Trey isn't a lost cause? I don't think he is, either, but your comp is off.

The comparison is on if you consider they play the same style of play. I'm not saying he'll be as good as Paul that's about as unfounded as saying Exam is a young Kobe, but I'm saying there's no reason to believe he has to be a blur to be successful in this league.

Paul's handles have increase over the course of years he certainly didn't have that kind of control as a rookie or 2nd year player.

This isn't about Trey being as good as Paul. This is about a certain style of play being successful.

Next Paul didn't dunk on Howard. Dwight was trailing the play and tried to block him from behind.

Trey was retreating and completely stuff Siva who has a 40+ inch vert. Either way both took a good bit of athleticism.

I see where you are trying to go, and I appreciate the point you are trying to make (I'm someone who thinks we over-rate "freak athleticism" way too much). But the thing that primarily defines Chris Paul's "style of play" is his pass-first mentality. That's what really puts the defense on it's heels and creates the flaws that he propagates. I wouldn't describe Trey as "pass first". Nobody would.

When you add to this mix the fact that Chris is actually a little faster than Trey, but also changes speeds much better -- so he can actually get into the lane -- then you almost have two totally different players.

Add handles.

Etc.
