Tobias Harris wants to come to utah

Why the urgency to waive Favors? Jazz don't have to opt in until Jan 6th, IINM. Most free agents will have made their decisions in the first few days of free agency. That gives the plenty of time to talk to every free agent they have on Plans A-Z. And then clear dollars, if needed, by July 6th when new contracts can be officially submitted. If the Jazz strike out, Favors is a great piece to have, 1) as a player and 2) as an expiring contract at the deadline.

I'm frustrated, too, by Exum's injuries. But I don't think you can dump him without giving up an asset. Do you want the Jazz to burn another pick without knowing if they can get someone else who really moves the needle in free agency? Either Dante requires asset(s) to dump (if he never heals), or he comes back and contributes to the team or becomes at least a trade chip bringing a pick our way.

Top free agent (like Harris) wants to sign with Utah? Yes, you get an agreement on July 1st or 2nd and then start making the moves to clear cap. A few very good FA's want to sign? Evaluate against losing Favs and make those moves by July 5th.
Yeah sad but true. Right now is literally the worst time to trade Exum as his value can't possibly get any lower. All we can do at this point is hope he recovers.

I’ve always considered myself a Favors loyalist, and even I know he needs to be gone.

Man, I’ll be happy if he can just get us off the 5th seed, then I can die a happy man.
All I've wanted for the LONGEST time is to have homecourt in the first round. Just be top-half of the bracket. Please. Pretty please. So many teams from the Dwill Boozer era until now have been SOOOOO close, yet not secured home court.

Just have home court wrapped up with 5 games to go in the regular season and then manage minutes, etc. going into the playoffs so we can wipe the floor with our first round opponent and go from there.

And the Jazz either won’t have or won’t need capspace next offseason. In other words, saving money for then won’t matter.

We can hope a rebuilding team with capspace is interested in developing Exum.

Marcus Morris is the answer. We need to guard Lebron and other than LEonard, M Morris is the best defender against LEbron the past 5 seasons

The problem with that, however, is that if he shows any kind of glimmer, our hopes for him are resurrected (no pun intended) and because of sunk cost fallacy, we then would refuse to sell when the stock is high(er). It’s not a matter of selling high or selling low — it’s a matter of cutting losses and opportunity cost. And if it’s not salary that’s costing us opportunity, it’s our infatuation with him that’s costing us opportunity. For instance, it’s possible that our infatuation with him cost us Crowder.

Piso wrote the info below in Portis thread and I’m wondering how this data and Darkwing Duck’s “facts” are not making case for favors so much clearer.

It’s either
Harris
OR
Favors Exum, portis

Which do you take?

Piso’s post:

I'm one of Favors' biggest supporters on this site. I'd let him go if it nets us Harris, but not for most of the other option out there, including Portis.

All of the impact stats--BPM (Favs +4.1 vs. Harris +.5) & RPM (Favs +2.3 vs. Harris +1.63)--say that Favors was the better player last year. That's in a season where Harris had probably the best shooting stretch of his career. The Clippers won at a .545 rate prior to the trade and a .666 rate after letting Harris go.

Harris seems like a good dude and is a slightly above average player. There's essentially no chance of getting excess value out of a Tobias Harris max deal. You don't win championships by giving the Tobias Harris/DeMar Derozans/Khris Middletons of the world $30MM+, particularly when you need to sacrifice depth/attach assets for the "privilege" of overpaying them.

There’s a reason the Sixers fans I know don’t want him back at the max or even too close to it. 25M per. That’s the ceiling of his worth.
