Trade deadline discussion

If the Jazz want Jerami Grant or Harrison Barnes, they'd need to pony up Ingles, Royce/Clarkson, a young player and at least 1 FRP. Both guys are available. Either move would be an upgrade for this season and going forward. Jazz should be looking for an athletic and dynamic wing to put between Mitchell and Gobert longer term.

Josh Richardson and Josh Hart make a lot of sense for the Jazz, but they don't really change who the Jazz are or raise their ceiling much. Replacing Royce in the starting and closing lineup with someone who's bigger and more dynamic does change who the Jazz are.

Jazz were always going to offer Ingles and a FRP. They just need to be willing to add Royce/Clarkson and one of their young guys.

I don't disagree but it doesn't sound like a Grant or Barnes type move is going to happen. The biggest type of acquisition we can look forward to is a Josh Richardson type...and even that might not happen. We likely just dump Joe's contract in a cost cutting move.

Move that I think would help, or are at least giving us the appropriate bang for our buck:

- Smart
- Marcus Morris
- Kenny G
- Holiday/Craig combo

Other moves I don’t think would move the needle much, if at all, or are very imbalanced on how much bang we’d get for our buck. If we don’t grab any of the above, it’s quite possible we flame out dramatically again and Quin gets fired after the playoffs and we go in search of Ainge’s guy, backlogging is too far in this process and being in the queue for a long enough time that we further squander our DM/RG window.

I think they want to do more than this, and that's why Danny Ainge stepped in a month ago. I guess we'll see.

This article could just be part of the posturing that's going on in the media right now. Jazz could be saying, "We're happy with our current team and don't feel like we need to make a move," when in reality, they're peeing their pants at the idea of getting Jerami Grant on this team.

I thought so too but after reading that Tony Jones article I've really lowered my expectations. Tony seems to have far more connections to the team than any other local reporter so I trust what he says.

Any deal sending out Joe for a contract that goes into next season puts us in the luxury for 2022-23. Ever since that stupid chain of events of signing Favors to the full MLE then trading a 1st to dump his contract, I don't see us making a deal for a player that only helps on the fringes.

So Holiday, Craig, Richardson and even Smart will put us in the some serious luxury hot water next year.

I think between him and Locke throwing a little cold water out there I think you know we are likely doing something small or nothing or salary dump.

Here is the big thing it signals to me. There are likely deals we could do if we included a first... Tony and Locke both said that you may not want to do that. If that is the case I think we are looking at some big change the next 2-4 years and they may actually be thinking about what that pick could be. I think Danny can use the rest of this season and playoffs as the evidence he needs for a BIG trade/pivot.

This summer is going to be disappointing if we go for a big pivot. If we are pivoting, it means that players disappointed in the playoffs. Mike and Bojan practically on expirings. Clarkson not on a great deal. And depending on how disappointing we look in the playoffs, Rudy's value could drop and maybe Don too.

We probably won't be able to pivot too much in the summer.

It's just kind of weird... everything we've been hearing is that they've been shopping Ingles contract and a first. Now it seems like plans have suddenly changed and they're no longer willing to give up a first. Maybe they no longer believe this team is a contender so they're not willing to mortgage the future to try and improve the roster?

Locke's deal he said is most likely is Joe, and some other piece, plus loosening the restrictions on the pick we already owe, so that we get all the way under the luxury tax.

I don't think Joe and JB gets us all the way under the tax. Maybe if we threw in Udoka... anyway... I'm totally prepared for JB, Joe, amended pick protections in a complete BS trade to save money. I also am ready for the local media to talk about how it was the Joe injury that changed thinking and that we are still all in.

We likely would have had to involve another team to find a smaller deal... though they did take back like $8M-10M in salary for next year.

The part that would have been hard is giving them 6-7M in less salary this year. Of course Ryan could just bite the bullet... since we are ALL IN!!!!!

Involving a third team would get kinda tough because they might suck the value out the deal or cut you out entirely.
It does show that a deal was within reach anyway.

It could have been that they saw it wouldn't get them Grant, Smart, or Barnes and the player's below that tier aren't worth the price. Could also be them waiting for the offseason to use the pick or to pivot another direction.
