What's new

Utah has claimed Forward Malcolm Thomas off waivers.

It's definitely an option, I just feel like all the young players should have been given the opportunity to start at the beginning of the season, then get moved to the bench if it was working. But it's still good to see them get some more consistent minutes and I wouldn't be surprised if they are starting after the all-star break or something.

I disagree. Reward players with a starting role. Don't punish players if they struggle a little by demoting them.

Spurs opt'ed to guarantee his contract through the end of the season 3 weeks ago and then waived him on Thursday to pick up Jeffers? Sounds a little strange.

Not strange. Both Green and Kawhi are out with injuries, so a wing is needed. Othyus has probably been the best SF in the D-league this season. They reluctantly let Thomas go

Apparently Pop thought he could make an okay stretch-four, as per SpursTalk

I don't see him getting much time though... especially how we already have Gobert who doesn't get much burn. I wonder how well he'll do in practice for them.

Media asked him where he was when he got the call, he said he was with his mom getting a pedicure.

Surprised they would claim off of waivers. Seems as if it is unlikely the Jazz would have lots of competitors knocking his door down to give him a 10-day tryout.

My bro-in-law is a big SDSU fan, so I asked him what he could tell me about Thomas. This is all based off of his college game, as he didn't follow him in the NBA or D-League at all. He's not really a big NBA fan.

"Very athletic. Plays bigger than 6'8". Blocked a lot of shots. Built like a 3, but plays strictly like a 4. When he left SDSU, he was in need of a jump shot. No idea if he's found one since."

I know that isn't a lot, but I figured any info is good info.

I suspect this was the case there and hope it is the case here. He could also become a rare small-ball/stretch 4 that has some rim protection ability?

The answer to everyone's question of why the Jazz claimed him and didn't wait for free agency: THEY LIKE THIS KID A LOT.

Looking at his (sparse) NBA stats and his D-League stats, it looks like he can rebound, block shots and shoot 3s. Of course, we all know that D-League stats don't always translate to NBA stats (e.g. Morris Almond, Blake Ahearn), but this at least indicates where his strengths might be.

Hi Guys

Since I'm from Israel, I watched Thomas last year when he played for Maccabi Tel Aviv for 3 months, before Maccabi cut him.(following that,he signed a 10 day deal with GS, then with the Bulls)

This guy is athletic and can block shots sometimes, but other than that- he is a SCRUB.

- he can play only at the PF position, but he don't have the size to guard heavy PF on D , and don't have the range to spread the floor on O.

- Don't have post game at all

- he has ZERO range, his only buckets were when he played above the rim and finished alley oops, so i don't get the talk about possible strech-4 .

- he has not-so-great hands, he was TO machine last year.

- the worst part: Maccabi finally cut him because he was locker room cancer. Maccabi hardly cut players so it says something about him and his ability to function on a respectable system (Maccabi is one of the powerhouses clubs in Europe).

When Maccabi signed him i also whatched Youtube videos and was excited, but he is the example why you can never count on Youtube highlights.

I hope this information helped...

As a BYU fan I saw him play for SDSU several times. He has pretty good lateral quickness, he would switch on Pick and Rolls onto Jimmer and do pretty well.

Honestly he plays Jeremy Evans exact position-undersized athletic hustling PF. He just happens to weigh about 20 more pounds.
