Utah Jazz Select Ace Bailey, Pick 5

I don't think Locke's assessment today of Ace is unfair, but it does demonstrate our flawed understanding of potential. Potential is way more than just physical attributes.

Looks like the link doesn’t work. What was the image?
I'm glad you asked because it's definitely worth the explanation. Some NBA influencer on Instagram talking about how before the draft ,Charlotte and Washington had a deal in place to trade the 4th and 6th picks. Danny apparently intel'd that out and called Peterson, the Charlotte GM, and said that Kon wasn't originally as high on their list, but he was going to be forced to take him at 5 if a trade went through, possibly simply out of spite.

And we all know what happened haha. Legend.

Anyone else think Ace has changed his 3pt shot?

Looking back at his highlights he seems to have lowered his set point and made his shot more one motiony .

With nothing going on I went back to watching some film on Ace. Watched this full game tape against Seton Hall. It was a really good game for him. Still had too many "tough shots" which he did make, but he actually attacked the hoop and had physical moments on offense. His on ball defense was really good, great lateral quickness and kept everything in front of him. Off ball defense was more a mixed bag. Some good rotations, but also some moments where he was sleeping a bit.

Just because things are so slow, we can add this Andy Larsen article about Ace, etc. (I don't think anything here is particularly earth-shattering):

Chatgpt summary:
  • Jazz rookie Ace Bailey needs to adapt to the NBA by improving his strength, adjusting his game, and managing the league's demanding schedule.
  • Coach Will Hardy emphasized:
    • Offensively: Bailey must learn to play without the ball, cut effectively, and use off-ball screens.
    • Defensively: He must rely on his length while building physical strength.
  • Bailey was limited in summer league play due to a hip flexor injury, participating in only two games.
  • A key focus for Bailey is developing a consistent routine to handle the NBA’s volume of practices, games, and appearances.
  • Jazz young players (rookies, sophomores, third-years) have been training in Salt Lake City throughout the summer and will continue until early September.
  • Players will take a short Labor Day break, then resume training in open gym sessions before training camp starts September 29.
  • Jazz president Austin Ainge stated the team will not rest healthy players for draft positioning like last season.
  • Coach Hardy responded to this shift with enthusiasm, saying he’s “very, very” excited to coach without such limitations.
  • Hardy made these comments at the Utah Coaches Collective Clinic, which hosted about 300 Utah youth basketball coaches.
  • The clinic aimed to support the local basketball community, offering coaching education on shooting, defense, and conditioning.

Everybody knows that he is lying, right?! Ainge is just hoping that trading away Collins, Sexton and Clarkson will make the Jazz so bad that there would be no need for any shenanigans. But if the Jazz unexpectedly start winning games...
