Fournier is VERY similar player to Hood. He is probably a bit more consistent but, he does the exact same things and has been worse defender than Hood for most of his career. I really don't see what people see in him that they clamour for him in one sentence and then trash Hood in the next. They are the same player! AND Fournier is paid 17M a year already... AND you have to give up asset to get him.

Hood has had a pretty luxurious defensive life, he has a lot of people doing work for him. The Jazz perform worse with Hood on the floor and the Magic perform better with Fournier on the floor defensively.

Fournier is also a much better facilitator.

Fewer >30 point games and fewer <10 point games (more consistent). Better eFG%, PER, on/off net adjusted +/- (>10!!!).

I think they would both benefit from a change of scenery. It feels like there's baggage with Rodney at the very minimum and who knows what's thrown at him on the market.

Detroit is in a free fall (lost 7 straight) and have been heavily reported to be shopping for improvements. Stan has said he is in win now mode. Their 2017 rookie, Luke Kennard, has been a disappointment but he is "unlikely to be moved" because they still have faith in him.
Jon Leuer has been ruled out for the year. He makes about $10 per year the next 2 years.

So, with all that, what about:

for
Leuer and Detroit's 2018 1st (top 10 protected)

Why for Detroit - Burks is a nice addition over a guy in Leuer who is out for the year. Leuer is a guy on a contract Detroit regrets. The Pistons have some financial concerns soon so dumping his $9.5 for 2019-20 is key. They want to win now and the 2018 1st in the late lottery doesn't promise much considering recent draft issues.

Why for us - We do it for the first rounder. Financially, we actually save a little the next two years. In 2019, we could stretch that last year of Leuer's contract.

The other thing that needs to be considered with Hood is that he is definitely injury-prone. Can that be said of Fournier? I think Hood's tendency for injuries brings his value down.

As for trading Favors, it might be better to look to trade Ricky because we have yet to see the Favor / Rudy combo with a point guard who can facilitate with both bigs on the floor.

Also, we talk about Favs developing a 3-point shot, how about Rudy developing a 15-footer. No reason he can't because he shoots foul shots fairly well. I remember it was the same with AK. He was a good foul shooter but couldn't make mid-range shots. Why is that?

I would prefer we trade Ricky for a draft pick and go with Donovan and Neto at the point for the rest of the year, and maybe Dante later. If Dante comes back, we don't need Ricky and he will be relegated to the bench. If I were DL I'd be looking for a team that could use a PG like Ricky. We also should try to trade JJ to a contender. I think he could still help a team in the playoffs, but the window on that opportunity for JJ is closing and it would be in the best interests of both JJ and the Jazz to find a contender for him. Jerebko and Udoh are solid bench players and good teammates. We should keep them -- Thabo too, if he can come back.

In my opinion, what we do with Ricky, Hood, and Burks is what DL needs to figure out.

There’s that and the fact that he might be more likely to buy into the his role here... I think there may be some value in switching out rod for a similar player but has a different set of expectations.

I wouldn’t be excited about switching them out. It’s be a pretty meh move but I’d understand it.

I don't think Hood will get more than 17M. Just not enough money to go around combined with his injury history and recent play.

3 years at a flat 17M is a better contract than Hood will get. Even if Rod gets a 4 deal starting at 15M I think the extra year makes it a worse deal based on his injury issues.

That's what I thought, but with rare exception, most of us really want Niko. The only reservation is giving Chicago a lottery pick. I think if Chicago would accept Favs, JJ or Burks and a lottery-protected pick, Lindsey would agree to the deal in a heartbeat.


My thoughts, too. I'm not sure I necessarily agree with Jones on this one. If Rodney would agree to a deal at $17M, I think Lindsey would sign him. The fact that Hood is on the trading block suggests he's asked for much more. $17M for a shooter of Fournier's quality is very reasonable - even cheap. Not sure who else Lindsey would target...maybe he thinks O'Neale is the answer and the Jazz don't need another wing. That's my fear; Lindsey has a history of being cheap and believing Quin and the developmental staff can turn anyone into a top end rotation player.

My prediction is not much will happen. Lindsey won't get a great offer for Hood; most likely he wants a draft pick that will fall just out of the lottery. Favs just doesn't have playoff teams that need him AND can send back expirings. Same is pretty much true of JJ.

So the deadline passes with nothing major happening. Lindsey says he tried to improve the team, but no deals made sense. He also says there were a lot of teams who really liked Utah's players, but the Jazz value who they have and want to keep them. Then Favors leaves for a better opportunity and Hood gets an offer the Jazz won't want to much. Lindsey will mumble his usual excue of maintaining financial flexibility and head to the Dollar Store again to see what cheap FA's he can find.

17M for Hood? GTFO with that ****. He's average at best on offense and a terrible defender. Why the **** would we pay that much for that type of player when money is really tightening up around the league? Are we looking to throw the same roster out there for the next 3-4 years? Cause we see how badly it sucks now.

Which is why holding onto Hood is more of a gamble than trading him. It just takes one ******** team and you're suddenly deciding whether Rodney Hood's 55 games a year is worth $75 million or you let him walk.

For the same price, it's easily Fournier for me.
