What's The Last Movie You’ve Seen?

I finally got around to watching Whiplash.

That's a firm 3 star film that has one scene so good right at the end that you find yourself wanting to give it an extra star. They certainly knew when to end the movie.

I also watched this:

Not worth the effort even though a person I respect recommended it to me. Would prefer to just watch Fitzcarraldo again.

This is a Mark Duplass movie. Although he is technically not a credited writer or director his fingerprints are all over it. Loved it.

I saw him in The One I Love. It was one of my favs of 2014, and it's one of the reasons I decided to watch Safety Not Guaranteed.

The One I Love was my favorite movie of the year.

He and his brother have written/directed some other movies as well. If you like films in that style I recommend Cyrus.

Him and Jay are probably my favorite guys in the industry right now. I'll see anything they are even remotely involved in. Togetherness was great. Transparent was great. Cyrus is one of my top 5 movies. Safety Not Guaranteed was great. Jeff Who Lives at Home is amazing. Love the Duplasses

We are speaking the same language. Their ability to generate real tension over the totally mundane is essentially unparalleled.

I'm also a big fan of Noah Baumbach and Joe Swanberg who are KIND OF in the same vein. I really enjoy the mumblecore movement even though the name is idiotic.

I'm not a Baumbach fan. I think a big chunk of his films are mean-spirited, particularly the Squid and the Whale. He also seems to consistently get grouped in as a lesser version of other better directors. I have not seen Frances Ha and it is possible that might change my opinion.

I don't think I've seen any Joe Swanberg movies. Alas, I am a failure that knows nothing.

My god, The Squid and the Whale is soooo mean. But IMO its one of the funniest movies ever. Frances Ha is really good, certainly more of a fun movie than SATW. His new one looks very good also.

Swanberg does really good stuff. Drinking Buddies is fantastic. Happy Christmas is pretty good also. He's young but he's good.

I'm a big mumblecore guy. You should watch the show Togetherness on HBO. It's very mumblecore-esque.
