Will Donovan Mitchell surpass Stockton/Malone careers with the Jazz?

I’ve said it once I’ve said it a million times. Stockton and Malone are the most underrated superstars of all time. Never did they have the roster help they needed to win a chip and on top of that they had to contend with Jordan, the GOAT to end all GOATS in the nba. I personally don’t see him ever reaching the type of numbers Stockton and Malone reached. Is it out of the question? No. But in my mind, if Stockton isn’t the most boring personality in the history of man kind and both he and Malone played for LA or Boston, the Knicks, or let’s face it, anywhere but Utah. They are in the discussion for top 5 all time for their numbers alone, and had there been no Jordan and the Roster Mitchell played with last year, they win at least 5 titles bare minimum. Those two were simply that good.

I love Mitchell, but to say he will surpass the statue’s after just finishing his rookie year is both insulting to Stockton and Malone and unfair to put that on Mitchell. I’m sorry but the fact that this is even a thread and most here are so easily believing this, then you all need a history lesson. Talk to me in 5 years when we can actually accurately answer this absurd question.

First off, I know, I know but the Donovan Mitchell hype train in Jazz land is real. We are just one year in, I get that, but I think most of us believe in Donovan quite a bit at this point. So I'll ask the question, will Donovan surpass Stockton and Malone's legacy here and be the greatest player in this franchises history? And what will it take for him to surpass them to be the greatest player in franchise history? And will he be the most loved player ever here?

I knew I would finally get that type of backlash for even asking the question. I’m not taking anything away from Stockton and Malone, two of the greatest players ever. I believe Mitchell has that capability. I didn’t say I was predicting he is going to pass them.

Maybe this is a more fair question. What does Donovan have to do bare minimum to get #45 retired here? .....more fair?

As for the "more athleticism" issue: The current oldest player in the NBA is Vince Carter. (He's not very good now, sure, but he transitioned his game and was still decent until 4 or 5 years ago)

I think he was still solid role player 2 years ago with Memphis and looked decent in the playoffs at 40. I am shocked he is heading into his 21st season. He is going to tie for the longest career in NBA history with Parish, Kevin Willis, and Garnett.

Oh, and Dirk is going to join them as well. Which is even more impressive that it is with 1 team.

Malone and Stockton both played 19 seasons.

As far as being the player who can actually take you there though, his window isn’t as wide. Stockton and Malone were 34 and 35 years old going into their first finals appearance and the two of them contending for 2 straight titles. To put that into perspective, Lebron is 33 and people sure pump his age a lot.

Donovans window isn’t going to be super wide. He beats you with speed and athleticism to be as affective as he is. Don is strong, but he’s not all that big. He’s 6’3”.....maybe and around 210 lbs. he will become a better shooter, and he’s certainly a big proponent of taking care of his body, so he could be great for a longer period than I think. He’ll be good for a long time after, but being the main guy who carries you to a title, I feel his window is shorter, and not as a knock on him, Donovan just isn’t a real big guy.

Well, he's certainly ahead of them, by far, at this stage of their careers. As CP3 said, he has no limits. No matter the stats, because they're based to some extent on longevity, if he can bring championships to the Jazz and be here at least 10 years with All-NBA first team selections, then for sure.

No! And because of who Stockton and Malone is to the franchise. They were the first cornerstones of this organization. They were, are and always will be the heart and soul of this team. When you compare players to them they better have the same drive. The same work ethic. The same dedication to one team. If Donovan stays his whole career in Utah win or lose and keeps up the numbers than he can join them. But until then he has lots more to prove. A hell of a lot more.

Be a good player, be loyal or be good enough to make allstars be there at least 7 years.

No just no. Stockton started on the bench behind former allstar, Malone had to defer to Dantley, who was one of the leading scorers in the league at the time, all Mitchell had to do was beat a weak minded Hood. Stockton, the first chance he got to start put up 14pts and 13.8 assists round that up to 14. Lol insanity!!! Onece Dantley left Malone put up 21pts and 10reb and shot up from there. Stockton and Malone came into this league every bit as good if not better then Mitchell. The Statues had way more obstacles to overcome then Mitchell did
