It is a bit of an unfair comparison, because through 9 games, Hill's on-court performance is top 10 in the NBA (not saying he is top 10 player, just judging his actual performance). While we all hope this is sustainable, this is unlikely. Give me 20 more games and I'll believe we have a big enough sample size to better judge.

Dante is huge extrapolation. He could continue upward or flat-line at any time. Great tools, impossible to tell the future.
 
Probably not. Not a knock on Exum though, Hill is just a fantastic player.

I'm glad this forum finally graduated from the "Exum will surpass Hill as the starter by January" nonsense.
 
I believe that Exum will be a productive member of the Jazz for many years because of his versatility and athleticism. But does he have the alpha traits necessary to lead this team the way Hill has? I question that. Is this something that can be taught? I don't believe so. George Hill is the take charge guy we've been waiting for as we don't have many alphas IMO. This is not a bad thing though and probably the reason the offense purrs with George Hill at the helm. Too many cooks in the kitchen and you have nothing but chaos. A good follower is just as important as a good leader IMO (provided you have a good leader). I remember how impressed I was with Hill in San Antonio, how he nudged Tony Parker for a time, and Parker is a definite alpha and one of the very best PGs the game has ever seen IMO. In Indy, he was underutilized IMO and forced to take a subservient position in a system that didn't give him free reign. I could go on about Frank Vogel and Paul George, but it's just an opinion and ultimately just water under the bridge.
 
Guys, I'm so glad we were the team trading for an exploding George Hill and it wasn't the Spurs. We were due for a dope-*** trade like this one.

As for the thread, I don't think it entirely matters. If Exum can do 80% of what Hill does at a way lower cost it helps us allocate funding towards other positions of weakness.

I think Exum could become a poor man's Gary Payton...he already is an elite defender, he's bigger/faster and has a better shooting stroke.
Back in the day, I clearly remember a lot of NBA "experts" in the media proclaiming GP was a bust after his 3rd season in the league, then he went on to become a Hall of Famer.
I'm not saying Exum will be a future HOF'er, but give him some time. This is basically only his sophomore year. I still think Exum can become special.
 
This has been abnormally high production from Hill to start this season. I think that looks giving some people an idea that he is better than he is. Maybe he took a huge jump this season but I think it will come down a bit. If we take what Hill has done up until this season I think that is Exums floor barring major injury. His ceiling is much higher.

Not necessarily the case .. is George Hill truly good enough to take this team to realistic title contention ??? Or do the Jazz really need Exum to somehow morph into his absolute best case scenario and fulfill his physical gifts to contend ?

Yeah, for the purpose of this question I had in mind that Hill will likely "regress to the mean" a bit, but will likely still end the season with close to all star numbers. But not top 10 in NBA.
 
Dante needs time. He has all the physical qualities you look for. Size, speed and agility are all well above average for his position. He needs to develop a killer mentality and that will happen when he becomes stronger and gains confidence in his ability to finish. Will Exum ever be as good of a shooter that Hill is? Probably not but then again, Hill doesn't possess the athletic prowess that Exum does. I think Dante has a lot to gain by sitting and watching Hill and if handled properly, in the future I do feel he can approach the level of play that George Hill is displaying right now.
 
Dante could become a star. His athleticism has that look to it. But he is on the slow path and who knows if he even sniffs his potential.

One thing is he is gassed too often. His stamina is not what it could or probably should be. Every once in a while he looks strong and shows flashes of greatness but too often he has his hands on his knees and is gasping.

Maybe he doesn't like Utah and it makes him tired. Maybe he has something wrong medically. Maybe he isn't eating good enough. Who knows, but a 21-year-old with access to training staff should probably be more fit even after ACL surgery, which was well over a year ago.
