If there is a lockout I bet 80% of the players are going to be in a pinch after about 6 months. The owners have all the control. If the players don't agree to the terms before July 1st, then the owners are going to go for the jugular and the players will regret not coming to an agreement earlier.

If they 'all the control' why did they lose the last two lock-out battles and why haven't they just locked out the players now, why make any concesions? If the players are locked out or the players file for disbanding their union their will be no contracts to keep the players tied to an NBA team. They could go play in europe for money, or they could play in the US for money. If they play in the US the players don't need to pay $400 Million for an NBA franchise, all they need is enough $$$ to buy a few jerseys, rent a college arena and advertise a game. They could have all-star game like rosters made of the best players because there are no contracts. Who wouldn't pay to watch Lebron, Wade, Dwight Howard and Deron Williams go up against Rose, Pierce, Garnett, Bynum, Durrant. Would you like to see Chris Paul teamed with Carmelo and Stoudermire? --now you can. So maybe espn and ABC can't broadcast that game, but I bet FOX, CBS, NBC would pay a little for the broadcast rights. The players might not make as much at first but ultimatley they could stand to make much more because they would be the owners.

You are right about one thing 80% of the players could be in a pinch. But Lebron James and Chris Paul don't care if Ronnie Price or Luke Ridinour have house payments to make. The stars are controlling the labor negotiations from the players side and will do whats good for the stars.

This is getting ridiculous. I usually enjoy reading your posts Mellow, but I am in agreement with margodydek, this goes down as worst post of the year.

First off you are saying that Owners have a pile of leases and nothing else. Guess what.....they all earned millions upon millions of dollars doing something else. Do you really think Larry Miller doesn't have other sources of income outside of the Jazz? Same goes for just about every owner in the league. While I'm sure a lot of players have investments, very few have large outside sources of income to sustain their lifestyle long-term. The players will break financially long before the owners even sweat.

Do you really think that the only costs associated with running a basketball league are jerseys, renting an arena, and advertising? How did you make it past the 3rd grade? Guess how much money (revenue) the NBA brought in in 2010? $3.5 billion. And guess what, the league LOST money. That means that to run a 30 team league it costs close to 4 billion dollars. Now to make this simple, let's say your SUPER league has 6 teams comprised of all the best players. 20% of 4 billion dollars is $800 million dollars. Let's pretend that your super league has 10 players on each team.
Do you think that each player is going to throw down over $13 million dollars each to finance just the FIRST YEAR of your super league?
