What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

I'm willing to throw anything on the table for AD but Gobert or Mitchell.
We don't have the assets to do it without throwing Gobert or Mitchell. Just assume that this trade is the one that does it. You can substitute Allen for Royce if it makes more sense to you but Gobert and the pick need to be there. In essence I'm doing the skeleton of the Kawhi trade - high end non-superstar player + late 1st + young player. Would you do it?

If AD gets a new agency maybe... if not then hard pass. I think Rudy is better than Demar by a wide margin. The beauty of the Leonard trade was they gave up a meh prospect, a late first in a weak draft, and a guy in DeRozan that was a little over-rated and had a big contract. They got a top 3 player in his prime and a high level roll player. They risked almost nothing. Rudy is too much risk.

I don't think the Toronto thing becomes a "model", but teams should be more willing to push in if the opportunity presents itself and they are close.

If the Jazz were serious about something like this, here's the order to do it in:

- Guarantee Favors and all the other unguaranteed guys
- Use your $14 Million in remaining cap space to sign a starting PF
- Trade Favors and Korver and a pick to Memphis for Mike Conley
- Trade Gobert+Royce+pick to New Orleans for AD

But to answer your question, I would absolutely trade Gobert for AD.

But the 2021 offseason is when both Rudy and Donovan's contracts expire.
Precisely. But Donovan would be restricted and his cap number would be a fraction of his next proper deal. You could lose/move on from Rudy, but that's why it's a big off-season.

Another wrinkle is if at some point the Jazz get Conley, the last year of his deal is 2021 (if he opted in).

The issue here is the Jazz still likely wouldn't be good enough to make a real run at a title and they also wouldn't be likely to keep him.

These are the types of swings the Jazz need to consider at some point, I don't think this is the one, though.

This thread may have just crossed into circle jerk territory.
If you were reading, you would find that that's not a very seriously entertained idea.

But to answer your question anyway: because the Jazz are a better team, he'd be getting traded, and you make such a move without the expectation that he re-signs.

The more realistic play is using the capspace to fully or mostly absorb a giant contract and sending picks. That doesn't mean you don't pitch to Tobias on June 30th. That's option 1.

So you get him for one year and give up Rudy for two? Maybe if you have a real shot at the title in that one year... AD, Donovan and Conley for a title? It's possible.

And the Jazz are a better team? I think AD, Zion and Jrue might be better than anything the Jazz could put together with AD and Donovan but I am sky high on Zion.

The NO ship has sailed for him which I think is more the point. I also think Zion is probably the most overrated prospect I've ever seen.

But yeah, the Jazz aren't close enough for that to be a real thought to entertain.
