What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

“Stretch 4”s kind of don’t exist anymore. They’re now just 4s, and we’re one of the last teams in the league to figure out that our way of doing things is bad.

What? Its not trending to have 39.6% of your team's salary and 4 roster spots committed to traditional centers?

Ive always thought Kemba was staying. And I still think Charlotte wants to do something aggressive to make him happier about coming back.

If I was the Jazz GM, and I knew I was striking out in FA. Then I would consider #23 and Korver for #12, #36, and one of Charlotte's many crap contracts preferably Marvin Williams.

Get Conley... put Dante in the deal... sign Niko or Rudy Gay to be the stretch 4... win titles!

We can make a free agent addition and get Conley... just gotta ship out Dante.

Conley and Jabari or Love and Beverley. Those are the two deals.

Can someone smarter than me walk me through the advantages and disadvantages of trading vs free agency (assuming the Jazz get someone on their A list -- Russell, Conley, Harris)?

I assume in both cases Rubio and Favors would have to be gone. A trade would likely take extra assets, but might not lock the Jazz up finance-wise as strongly, correct? A trade would also allow them to operate over the cap, right (though I'm a bit fuzzy on the benefits)?

I'm presuming there are enough FAs out on the market that the Jazz figure they could make up for some of the losses from a trade fairly cheaply, but trading would not allow them the moral victory of bringing home a top-flight free agent.

Anyway, kudos to anyone is willing to take the time to lay out the general landscape simply.
The differences are we can trade for someone whether they want to come to the Jazz or not, whereas FAs aren’t that interested in coming.

If the Jazz make a Conley trade, it means they were told they had very little chance at even getting meetings with anyone they're targeting.

It sounds like it may be the other way around. If the Jazz pursue Russell or Harris it may be because they determine that they can't get Conley.

The Jazz 'doing their homework' means contacting agents and seeing who they have a realistic chance at getting a meeting with. The 'tampering' is already well underway. If the Jazz make a Conley trade, it means they were told they had very little chance at even getting meetings with anyone they're targeting.

Yes. At this point teams are getting some idea of who is a realistic target.

I was hoping for something a little less simple, but thanks for paying attention to me.
The difference is that if we make a trade, we have the MLE. If we go the FA route, all you have is the room exception. So that’s your team.
