Locked on Jazz today:
Jazz offensive rating was a 96.7 against Clips v 107 season average. The Jazz had a hard time getting the shots they wanted, particularly 3s.
The Jazz getting 3 point shots and making them will be huge in this series. Mentions Gobert rolling and drawing in defenders to create 3 point looks
Gobert averaged 14 points, 12 rebs, 66% FG... v Clippers He did much better the last 2 games v Clips
Hayward played 3 games v Clippers. He struggled all 3 and missed his midrange shot. 5-19 feet he was 3-16. With Jordan on the floor he was 11-35 and couldn't get to the rim.
Hood went 8-30 FGs v Clippers, was 2-6 from 3. Only 4 of his shots were catch and shoot. He is 42% on catch and shoot 3s. he is one of the best late in the shot clock players in the NBA
Hill is 50% corners 3s since allstar break, his D has suffered post allstar break
Jazz 5th best at pick n roll
Jordon is aggressive on D, limit rim shots #25 defending the rim, #2 defending mid range shot.
Clips are really good at denying access to rim and 3s. Poor at defending shots actually taken at the rim.
Jazz are 27th in the league in isolation and the Clips are #2 at defending this, stay away from ISO!
JJ is 20-33 from 3 last 6 games, unguarded he is 70% on catch and shoot, his FG% numbers spike with 4+ feet of room
Clips start 5 is the 2nd best 5 man unit in the NBA, only Warriors starting 5 is better (not sure what stat this is based off of)
This season the Clips starters have roughly 800 more playing minutes together v. Jazz preferred starting 5 (Gobert/Favors/Hayward/Hood/Hill)
Then he joined the Locked on Clippers host
Clips host points out how the Clips started strong and finished strong, middles was worse. Clips are healthy and that the strong Clippers team should show up at this point. Both hosts play up the teams as being better than perceived. Jazz and Clips better than Spurs and Rockets?
Clips may play Griffin at the 4 a little when the Jazz have 4 shooters because JJ and Ingles are slower players.
Clips host mentions that they often fail to adjust when Jordon rotates defensively. Looks for mismatches in the Jazz's favor
Felton is a good defender but is slow. He is good in the pick'n'roll D. Jazz could take advantage of this by using the pick'n'roll to attack through Crawford's man. Crawford is poor here. "really big weakness"
Clips host says to pay attention to the Gobert/Jordon matchup. Which Jordon will show up? Mentions him often being disengaged. If Gobert dominates this gets really hard for the Clips, if Jordon matches Gobert's level the Jazz will struggle with space and shots
They go back to the Jazz 3s and inability to get that shot. Clips host mentions Hood and Crawford as guys that tend to wilt in the playoffs.
Jazz are capable of stymying the Clips offensively as twice this year they held the Clips well below their offensive averages.
Hill being healthy could add a whole new wrinkle to the Jazz O, Clips have been solid defensively when healthy.
Clips host mentions Clips experience and balance, that they can win shoot outs and slow defensive games. Jazz specialize in slow defensive games and struggles in shoot outs.
Again back to the Jazz getting and making 3 point shots.
Clippers have a lot of baggage/bad experiences together. When things go bad they can panic due to their past playoff history. Psychological component. When Paul "pounds" the ball the Clippers are worse. If the Jazz have a big comeback win in game 1 or 2 that might break the Clips.
Clips host mentions Jazz low assists per game but that it can come from multiple sources (Diaw, Ingles...) that can add dimension to the Jazz O. Clips are higher on assists but it is top heavy and concentrated in 1-2 players. Jazz have a "huge amount" of potential assists. Jazz stlye often plays off the bounce a lot and this negates an actual assist despite being a pass heavy team.
Clips says Jazz play "beautiful" basketball.
Locke says Jazz do not play a lot of high pick'n'roll but that we might see it to attack Crawford or Felton with mismatches
Edit: This was a really good Podcast crammed full of info and Locke put a ton of work into this. Kudos Locke
