Donald Fires FBI Director who's investigating Russian Election Hacking

Welp. There you go. You can only hide the truth for so long.
The Rosenstein excuse was a transparent and absurd subterfuge. Trump’s anger issues and impulsive nature led him to fire Comey at the worst possible time, right as Comey was seeking to expand the Trump-Russia investigation. Collusion with Russia during the election is an ongoing embarrassment for Trump and an endless political crucible to endure but it was never something over which Trump was going to face impeachment. Obstruction of justice, however, is a completely different story. Through his own uncontrollable hubris, Trump has opened the door to the very charge that brought down Nixon.

BTW - because of this, Trump is the first president since Richard Nixon to have fired a law enforcement official overseeing an investigation with ties to the White House.

What a GREAT company to be in.

I'd be pretty tickled if Trump turned out to be as good a president as Nixon was.

But how do you prove beyond a reasonable doubt why Trump really fired Comey?

Not saying he will be impeached, just that obstruction of justice is an impeachable offense and that there will now be more investigations, apart from the Trump-Russia probes, into Trump's motivation for firing Comey. What comes of them may take a year or more to play out. This is just unbelievable stupidity on Trump’s part. At the very least, he’s further crippled his ability to govern, and at worst, he's opened the door to his own impeachment.

Yeah it's incredibly stupid for him to admit that he didn't act on the recommendation of the report. That was obviously the 'game plan' set out by his team, but Trump just can't help himself:

"I was going to fire Comey," Trump said in an interview with NBC. The White House and Vice President Mike Pence have said the president acted on the recommendation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

"Regardless of recommendation I was going to fire Comey," Trump said.

Talk about "shooting oneself in the foot".... or "putting one's foot in the mouth".... whichever idiom you prefer, they both seems to work perfectly in this case.

You do realize the other side feels the exact same way, right?

Of course they do. It is the nature of partisan politics. Everybody thinks their "side" is right and the other side is stupid/evil/"biased". At least the more extreme adherents feel that way. There are actually level-headed people on both sides that are capable of intelligent conversation about a subject, but the gap is getting wider and has been for 3 decades.

You're right, the gap between the two sides is increasing. But that's not because one side is becoming more liberal. Quite the opposite. The democrats have endorsed platforms that used to be promoted by republicans in the 60s and 70s. Meanwhile, the GOP has become an outlier party. It has become so radical that it is incapable of modern-day government. It rejects moderation, scientific thought, facts, and traditional institutions and processes. Hell, just look at their economic, tax, and health care reform. It does nothing but hurt most workers, drive up the deficits, damage safety nets, and enrich a handful. That's not how modern-day democracies are supposed to work.

Just look at how a centrist like President obama was painted by the GOP. Look at how his presidency was demonized. The GOP shut down the government and lowered our nation's credit ratings to purposely hurt his presidency. Obamacare for hells sakes was the GOP's reform for health care. That's why they haven't been able to come up with an alternative in 7 years.

Today's GOP represents the greatest threat to democracy that the western world has seen in almost a century. Through decades now of am radio, Fox News, and the apprentice, the right has created an "us" vs "them" (urbanites vs rural, white vs black, educated vs uneducated, job creators vs welfare queens, etc) mentality that has given a "cult of personality" to Donald trump. Was he wrong when he claimed that he could gun down someone on 5th avenue and get away with it?

Today, you have blatant lying, outrageous positions, and clear obstruction of justice from Donald trump. When Nixon attempted this, the senate majority leader who was also republican said, "we needed to find out what The president knows and when he learned of it." Today's radical GOP mostly demonstrates apathy towards obscene behavior (firing the FBI director who's investigating the president) that wouldn't have been tolerated in any previous administration.

I'm not sure when or if Americans on the right are going to wake up. But most who aren't addicted to Fox News and certainly those outside of our country recognize that democracy is certainly in peril here in America. And it's mostly the fault of the GOP. It's radical agenda, it's brainwashing propaganda, and it's outrageous president.

For literally the last 36 hours Spicer, Conway, and other WH officials have claimed that Trump fired Comey because of Rosenstein's findings.

Just a few hours ago Donald admitted to Lester Holt on NBC news that he was going to fire him anyway, regardless of what Rosenstein recommended. Yet another lie from this WH administration.

Again, this type of behavior wouldn't have been tolerated at any point in our nation's history. Why is the right so content now? They wouldn't let Hillary or Obama get away with this. Why now? For someone who is supposedly innocent, Trump acts as guilty as possible.

Where there's smoke there's fire. There's way too much smoke here. Look at how Donald refuses to release his tax returns, becomes so defensive over Russia, has so many cabinet members who have lied about improper relations with Russia, and fires anyone who investigates it. Literally not a week goes by where he doesn't say or do something that raises suspicion.

Even if he isn't impeached, his ability to effectively promote and enforce meaningful legislation has been permanently damaged. Once the 2018 midterms occur and democrats retake the House, his ability to promote and enforce meaningful legislation will be gone. The Donald Trump experiment will be over by 2020 (if he even makes it that long).

The funny thing is, Democrats don't even have to try. The Donald is slitting his own throat everyday with his outrageous behavior. Approval rating is in the 30s and is now slipping even among Republicans.

It’s become obvious there needs to be a special prosecutor, someone independent of the FBI and both major parties.

nah, this is just obvious stupidity.

We don't need more politicized hacks doing the rounds at CNN and other hatchet-job loser media retailers who've long lost their objectivity and honesty in reporting.

All of the living former US Attorney Generals have said it was not Comey's job to decide whether Clinton or anyone else should be charged with any "crime", as Comey twice did in regard to Hillary. Comey usurped the role of the Justice Dept.

A new director for the FBI will need to pass the scrutiny of both political parties, and that is really all we need to do. Actually get someone in there who will not politicize the Dept.

Obama and Trump may be scrutinized for politicizing the Justice Dept. itself, and it is something the public should not accept of any President.

The fundamental problem we face in our national politics is our own level of partisanship.... the unwillingness of the Democratic Party to accept the vote/election as conforming to our Constitutional procedure.

Trump has not so far made a play to prosecute Hillary.... for many obvious criminal and conspiratorial and corrupt actions while in office as Secretary of State, nor for her illegal handling of her classified communications, which she did intending to circumvent the FOIA requirements applicable to her official communications. It would be the Justice Dept that should decide that.

But hey, if you-all wanna chase the hobgoblins of Russian influence down the Trump rabbit hole, have a fun time in that wonderland. Nothing I've heard any rumor about so far even comes close to what Ted Kennedy did during the Reagan years, or Obama's promise to be more flexible after his re-election.

This investigation is pure insanity in the context of inter-governmental communications and coordination going on regularly every day in our current context of global governance.

Comey should have been fired by Obama for overstepping his authority last July 5.

Please don't use the term "Republicans" as synonymous with "Trump supporters". I've consistently been very anti-Trump, but am still a Republican.

There's no question that Trump's prepared excuse for firing Comey was not the actual reason. As I'm sure you know, all reports agree that Trump first decided to fire Comey, and then asked the AG and deputy AG to write up some reasons why. And that's shameful.

Trump's claim that the he was following the deputy AG's recommendation to fire Comey pissed the deputy AG off so much that he nearly resigned. (https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/dep...-resigning-upset-wh-pinning/story?id=47342541.) Again, shameful act by Trump to blame the firing on Rosenstein.

To add insult to injury, Comey found out about his firing from the ticker on a TV screen. No personal notification at all. Again, shameful.

Only the second time a President has fired the FBI director in history. Just when I think my opinion of Trump cannot get any lower.

I had previously thought that there was nothing to the Russia thing... that it should be investigated, but that the investigation would not find any evidence of wrongdoing. Now I'm not so sure.

We need someone other than John McCain in the senate to call out this shameful behavior, wouldn't you agree?

Moderates in your party have remained far too content over Trump's outrageous behavior over the past 2 years.

it's time to demand much more out of the right's president, media, and Senate. The nonstop lying, tweet storms, and spin needs to end. Time for the GOP to clean its inner vessel. It's utterly putrid. McConnell, Ryan, and Donald should all be ashamed!

I'm a repub? What? LMFAO at Thriller. Not to mention I wasn't even part of this convo or even think Thriller is worth a discussion.

I agree with the general vibe going on here. Sure he can fire him but the timing is highly suspicious. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I want an independent investigation into all this. One that the Rs and Ds cannot mess with more than they already are.

Oh please, you, LG, and dutch are as blindly partisan as anyone on this board. Anything to the left of you guys is socialist.

The next time you criticize the GOP it'll be the first.

You went from Hillary being guilty of planning and executing Benghazi to letting Donald off the hook over everything (until just now when it's painfully obvious he colluded with Russia and is firing anyone who dares investigate it).

I just wished you held Donald anywhere close to the same standard you hold democrats. Had other partisans like you done that then Donald would've never been elected in the first place. Such an irresponsible and outrageous candidate.

i think the take home message from here is that your country is screwed, run by morons on both sides and that Australia needs to build a wall to keep all you imbeciles out of here...

one thing on the plus side for all you "Subjects of "Er Majesty the Queen" is that good manners Trumps every issue of public discourses..... well.... used to, at least, except for in the case of how shamefully the King's appointed colonial officials treated some colonists.

We don't put on airs.

And, btw, it's a statistical certainty that you've got more English Royal Blood than those half-German pretenders to the Crown. You should step up to claim your Royal Rights.

Just wondering if you understand this IQ thing. So nobody here has an IQ of 40. At that IQ, one would be suffering from serious mental retardation. I also remember you saying **** like "Trump has an IQ of 160". That's off the charts. Possibly higher than Einstein.

I can't tell if it's hyperbole, or if you just don't know how IQ works.

The IQ "score" is a silly made-up idea with no objective reality. It presumes to be a statistical distribution with a mean and average of 100. I am not certain about this point, but I believe the statistical distribution figures correlate to imply that 90% of the class will be between 80 and 120. and 99% will be within the range 60-140. Or something like that. I got Trump's IQ from a bit of Yahoo click-bait, and it was 158, and with such authoritative precise data value that it would be unwise for anyone to question it....

According to my uncle, who had the results in hand, my IQ in the fourth grade was 40, and by the twelfth grade it was 140. With that kind of data, extrapolated another 40 years, I can scientifically project my current IQ at an impressive 640. With all the certainty that by 2050 the Earth's atmosphere will be 1 degree warmer. Of course, as we all know, extrapolation is the heart of truth, and nothing Trumps those as-yet-unmeasured stretches of any line of projection.

What I don't understand is how anyone can just refuse to believe such science.

Einstein was a dunce who flunked math and had an IQ of 72, and he was unfortunately misunderstood on the subject of relativity because nobody could follow his rambling math equations, which somebody found in the margins of his 5th grade slate, mistaking his doodle for something smart.....

The reason everybody thinks Einstein was smart is just because some progressive ideologues decided to destroy the foundations of logic and use the doodles to fantasize about time travel in little police call-boxes called "The Tardus".

And, finally, according to what I was personally told by someone who did know him, "Einstein didn't know beans", and therefore neither does my nuclear physicist brother. Except my brother and I both hoed fields of beans in the hot summer sun, and tied the runners up on trellises, and picked the pods and shelled them in the fall. And ate them. Sometimes boiled, sometimes raw.

Curiously, Einstein couldn't walk across the campus at Princeton and not wonder what those plants were, and had the astonishing lack of pretense it takes to ask direct simple questions, like "What are those?".....

Which gave the short little farm-boy at his side the lifetime of exhilaration of telling students he knew more about beans than Einstein.

For Siro, here is a bit on the IQ issue.... better than my characterization of it perhaps, but largely backing the notion that the brackets I guessed are about right.

I still don't believe we can measure intelligence, really, with any test however researched or developed.

Probably depends on who Trump appoints as the new director.

I read that Comey was the first FBI director to ever have a negative vote for confirmation. He had a single negative vote (by Rand Paul, I believe, not sure the reasons why). And that's the MOST negative votes ever! Who thinks the next director will be anywhere close to that?

sherrif david clarke for FBI director. :D

would have been perfect if he was a woman.
