Utah Trade Deadline Discussion

We don't have to look far to see the Cavs doing a similar trade. They traded Mo Williams and a top 10 protected 2019 1st for expiring Korver just last year - http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/...liers-acquire-kyle-korver-trade-atlanta-hawks

So you are telling me a potentially better 1st (Cavs 2019) for expiring 35 year old Korver is better than a first in the bottom 8 this year for expiring 26 year old Favors?

In a way, yes. LeBron's status on the team wasn't up in the air. If they knew LeBron was staying any and all picks would have been gone yesterday.

Jazz tried back in the days. Two infamous trades were nixed because players didn't want to play in Utah.
Favors isn't the only player available to Cleveland. If I were Cleveland I'd be trying to land Jordan. Favors is a second or third choice.

The Cavs can trade the Brooklyn pick for sure. However, who can they get with that pick who is worth it who is actually available?

Mirotic? Kemba? Expiring Lou Williams? Expiring Avery Bradley? DeAndre Jordan? Who else?

None of those guys are worth the Brooklyn pick. They are worth the Cavs pick, but Favors plays the position Love just vacated.

I think that the Jazz actually have a decent amount of leverage at the deadline. Because we're one of the few teams around that have good amount of expiring contracts. And our expiring contracts are actually decent players. They are contracts that will be appealing to both buyers and sellers at the deadline.

Kemba for sure and even Hood would be a better use of assets than Favors. No Favors would play Center and LeBron/Crowder would play the 4.

Yes it's true, but the leverage comes from taking on future money. The move is to use the expiring contracts like Favors and Johnson take on 2018/2019 salary for assets in return.

You get the point MDAV c'mon man. Favors plays in the post where Love is missing. He is better than TT at either PF or C.

The Cavs only get Kemba if they take back a bad contract because they arent sending the good player Charlotte has demanded. Can't get Kemba with just the Brooklyn pick.

Same with us, we only get a pick for Favors if we take on bad money like Thompson.

Leverage comes when a contender wants to get better now without sacrificing future flexibility. Hell, even 6 seed NOLA doesn't want to trade for a quality player because he would be owed $12.5 for next year.
