Utah Trade Deadline Discussion

I will settle for just not losing Favors for nothing at this point. Jazz absolutely need to be proactive. This is why teams stockpile expiring contracts, and the Jazz aren't very asset-rich.

Atlanta, Boston and Philadelphia are the teams that have multiple first-round picks both this year and next. All three have been mentioned as possible destinations for Rodney Hood. Seems like any of them are in position to be involved with a Nikola Mirotic deal

If the Jazz can't move Rodney I might be tempted to risk him getting a crazy offer and just match it and THEN trade him when he'll have a lot more value next year. Rodney on a 3 or 4 year deal for around 12 million would be a really good trade chip. There's not a ton of money out there and it's possible he won't get a huge deal. This assumes the Jazz are looking more toward 2019 for any bigger FA splash. Favors is a different situation. I think you definitely need to move him and JJ before the deadline. If you can get a first round pick for Hood I'd do that too.

I think the problem we have is a repeating pattern of:

Training camp: We'll move them at the deadline when they have value to a contender.
Deadline: We'll move them on draft night.
Draft night: We'll move them when FA opens up.
Training camp: We'll move them at the deadline when they're a valuable expiring.
Deadline: They'll be more valuable after we re-sign them and we can move them at the deadline.

Oh I agree I would be frustrated. But I'd rather not make a trade just to make one. I still think it's likely that Hood has a good enough market that he'll be gone. I'm just saying that I can see the logic in waiting it out so that he recoups his value some more. He is a good player who will put up numbers that other teams will be interested in. It's a risk if he gets a huge offer. Let's just hope they can move him for something worthwhile this week.

I think many people would be upset if the Jazz choose to not trade anyone due to recent success and then the team starts losing again after the deadline.

I agree 100%.

I just don't see how Burks and JoeJ fit into the long term narrative of our Jazz. Then there is Hood who seems to be halfway out already. Favors is up for debate, the other three not so much.

If those 3 guys are considered expendable, we have $24 million of contracts we can deal right now -
- JoeJ $10.5 expiring
- Burks $10.85 this year, $11.5 next
- Hood $2.4 UFA

All three of those are "tradeable" contracts. They don't come with that much risk. All three guys can contribute.

This was probably brought up yesterday but I missed it. Is there any reason why the following trade doesn't work?

Pelicans get: Derrick Favors
Bulls get: Omer Asik and the Pelicans 1st
Jazz get: Nikola Mirotic

The Pelicans want a serviceable big to help keep them in the playoff hunt with Boogie out. But they don't want to be locked into the second year Mirotic has with his team option. So they get Favors instead.

The Bulls get the 1st round pick that they want for Mirotic.

The Jazz get the stretch 4 they want and are fine with the Bulls picking up his team option for next year before he's dealt.

Mirotic gets his contract picked up like he wants and he ends up in his preferred destination.

Seems like a win-win-win-win for all parties. The only thing I can think of is maybe NO doesn't want Favs for whatever reason?

I think that's a common narrative that comes up, though (not from you, just in general), about "not making a trade just to make a trade." There are often valid reasons to make a trade and many not-valid, and the FO (under KOC, really) pushed back saying he wouldn't make a trade to make a trade. I'm not desperate for a trade -- but I am desperate for us to make a move to pick up a stretch four and there's really only one available right now. Favors should be moved, even if it's for a second round pick, but I'm not certain how optimistic I am about any moves happening, really.

There will be a move but I think we are holding out for best return. Likely have fall back deals in place.

With all the injuries it makes sense to wait. Favs would not have been a great add for NO last week but now he would be very important.

Patience is good as long as our trade assets stay healthy.
