What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

The idea that we could basically call it an offseason before it’s really even begun is laughable. You build the best team you can regardless of the competition.

The Jazz still need another real piece. One that’s obviously a starter and finisher. Not some square peg like Favors and not some piece you pick up from the garbage heap like whatever R Mex was suggesting.

Niko is the closest realistic thing that’s even close to within reach. If we can get something better, great, but that would require being rid of Exum’s contract with no returning salary to even begin to have the conversation about something obviously better, and that’s STILL short of a max slot.

Like what then? There isnt really much out there to turn him into. More likely to use his salary to turn into someone else via trade and thats more likely later.
I'm not really sure. I think we have to maximize value somehow.

If we are moving on from Favors, we better trade Favors to get any kind of asset we can. When we sign somebody, it better be somebody who either A solves issues right away or B has room to grow into something special.

Is an A option Mirotic? Is a B option Portis or Jabari?

This whole Laker thing pisses me off. ****.

His defensive rating wasnt good this year but it was the same as Harris, Saric, Doncic, Aldridge, Gasol, Gallinari, and Udoh.
I've always wondered why NBA.com/Stats has numbers so vastly different than Basketball-Reference.com. Someone is wrong. Maybe both. According to basketball-reference, Jabari's season DRtg was 113; Udoh's was 100. That makes a lot more sense than NBA.com's numbers -- particularly when considering that Udoh is among the league leaders in Def Pts in the Paint and Opp. FG% in the Paint.

It could just mean they’re paying more for DLo than they would’ve earlier and an extra several million.

It could also be Kyrie now. Or Butler. I don’t see Kawhi going there. Tobias doesn’t make sense. I don’t think Klay will be a real factor or option THIS year, and Durant certainly won’t.

This is still the year to try above all others.

Once AD waived his trade kicker, they had $27 for Russell's max.

They are gonna be stacked. We need another weapon or really good player to combat them and others.

I never know which numbers either. But either way the point is any of those numbers you can pull a number of misplaced people on those stats that make them kind of invalid. Defensive stats for teams are solid, but for individuals I dont really buy into them too much.

NBA is where all the tracking stats and main stats originate. Other sites take their numbers from them. Their calculations are supposedly the same for most of those numbers but they do come out very different.

Except it seems that for the most part, numbers like DRtg, Defensive Win Shares, Def. Box Plus/Minus, et al, seem to track pretty closely to the players' reputations on the defensive end - with only a few exceptions -- particularly with a large enough sample size.

I dont think Players reps are always accurate and I dont think they lineup up all that well with that. There are just too many players all over the place especially from players I watch a lot.

You know what? I'm in... lets do it. I'm sick of watching people blaming players for not fitting, coaches for not having the balls to bench players that supposedly don't deserve to be on the floor. I'm sick of this constant search of the perfect fit BS. We fixed the PG fit... I don't want another year where we scapegoat a player that doesn't deserve it. Let Favors go and lets see what this team can do without any excuses and without scapegoats to blame. Lets see what this team can do with the perfect fitting players that are supposed to solve all/most our problems.

Waive Favors. Get Mirotic for as little money as possible and lets go.

Here's my thing. The Jazz have some very good analytics guys. The more data they have, the better they seem to be in nailing which players will be a good addition. They may miss on a mystery like Tony Bradley, but give them a few years of data in the g league or euroleague, they seem to know what's up.

That being said, the Jazz have always been lukewarm towards Mirotic. They have all the stats, all the analysis, everything they need. It tells me right where they value him. That valuation is probably pretty accurate.

I think if we get Mirotic by dropping Favors, it will be because he is the b-side of the deal they really want. He will be the second player. I don't think his salary and playing demands fit into that model. We aren't dropping Favors in a situation where Mirotic is the meat of what we get back.

You know this how? they didn't want to give up a first for him 2 years ago. Last year he was hurt when he was traded and it didn't make sense for us to get him. When we thought we were getting him a couple years ago DL seemed more than lukewarm when discussing a 6'10" sniper.

The cost, need, and roster fit make the most sense to do it now. I think we are over complicating things a bit.

A) the Jazz aren’t close to having a max slot
B) the Jazz aren’t close to having a max slot
C) I’m not sure why the Clippers would do that
D) Yes-ish. This is the only thing we would appear to remotely have any control over.

A/B) The Jazz would have to move Ingles' contract to open up a max slot.
C) The Clippers will need to move Gallinari's contract to open up a 2nd max slot.

Oh there will be another scapegoat. You can bet the farm on that. And I agree with you 100%

What are the analytics they’re seeing on Exum, then? IIRC, he’s the worst analytics player ever.

Now you’re talkin’!

Here’s another wrinkle to Niko: if you sign him, Udoh can be your primary backup C. Dead serious.
