News, rumors and buzz around the draft and free agency

what teams can even trade for Griffin?
Miami. If Detroit is looking to salary dump, Dragic is a great way to shed the contract.

Charlotte. If Detroit is looking to salary dump, Charlotte has Biyombo, MKG and Marvin as massive expirings. Plus they have their picks.

OKC. If Detroit is looking to dump salary, OKC has Roberson, Patterson and others. Everybody knows they have picks too. Shroeder, Roberson, Patterson and picks works. Paul, Griffin, and Adams looks pretty good.

So if I'm not missing something we are set up and there is nothing in the way of us officially signing Ed Davis, Jeff Green and Mudiay now. They should be soon to follow.

Whichever guy gets cut would also be an “affiliate” player for the Stars - if they decide to stay in the G-League instead of going back to Europe. Either way, this is a low risk option to fill the 15th spot on the team. Neither guy is guaranteed to make it through the full season. There’s always the chance that a buyout guy could bump the 2nd one off the roster after the trade deadline.

per Jeff Siegel, Kidd guaranteed $250K to Jan, then fully guaranteed 1st yr min; Howard guaranteed $50K (+150K € buyout), bumps to $250K if on roster Opening Night, guaranteed to Jan like Kidd, then 1st year min. Both on 3 year w/ 2 & 3 non-guaranteed. So, Jazz are into these guys $250K and $220K each, not a high risk, to figure out who stays.

NWG is fully guaranteed, and we need guard spots more than forwards, IMO. See if he sticks or they trade him in Feb. Will see how he and Mudiay are progressing.

What is advantage of an "affiliate" player? Think we can have up to 4, they can be called up to play NBA games (paid prorated days) - but think they are still 'free agents' so any team can take them.

This right?

Affiliate players can not be called up.

If a player is cut from training camp, but then goes back to the G-league as an affiliate player they’re assigned to that NBA team’s G-league team. They are free agents. Can be signed by any NBA team on a 2-way or NBA 15 man roster contract. Cant be called up to the NBA squad without an NBA contract.

Some information about the guarantees on Kidd and Howard's contracts:

So... Kidd got the bigger guarantee by the Jazz at 250K guaranteed. Howard got only 50K guaranteed, but they also had to spend about 200K in buy out for him, so their investment in those is about equal.

They also kept their options open to add Brantley if both those guys flame out and they want to add him to the 15 man roster before their fully guaranteed money kicks in come January.

NWG contract reported to be 3 yrs $4.8M

Question: on draft & stash players, do the years in Europe count as years of experience?
Assume not, but interesting that NWG contract avg $1.6M/yr
thx

Shams tweeted that the last two years are not guaranteed, but he deleted the tweet.

No. They are not. He’s still technically a rookie like O’Neale was in 2017. He must’ve really raised his profile to get better than the minimum.

“We think Nigel can be a vintage Sam Cassell.”

A 3-yr contract at the minimum for a player with no service time this season must be for at least a total of ~$4.2mm.

NWG got an extra $600k total over 3 years. It's not that much more than the minimum.
