El Paso Shooting

Mandating firearm education is not a very good look, domestically or internationally.
In a nation full of guns I think it's the only responsible thing to do.

I'm not talking about teaching people how to shoot. I'm not talking about having real guns in a classroom. I'm talking about teaching students how firearms work, the difference between a semi-auto and a lever-action. Teaching proper nomenclature (a massive point of division in any current gun debate, with gun control advocates constantly using the wrong terms, saying absolutely stupid things like hollow-points are exploding ammo or that they are "cop-killer" bullets). How to safely disable a firearm. Stuff like that, along with knowing when someone is acting inappropriately with a firearm, so that they can notify someone immediately.

Second of all, what I have advocated for for many years now is that in a nation with the gun rights we have, firearm safety and basic use should be taught in our schools. Their needs to be an emphasis on disciplined, responsible ownership.

Nobody can make the NRA do anything, but the NRA ought to be shamed into focusing less on blocking any and all gun legislation and primarily focus on educating gun owners on the safe and responsible use of their firearms. They should be at the forefront of setting the standards for when guns can, but more importantly when they can't, be used for self-defense.

But placing no hope on what the NRA might or might not do, assuming they'll continue to be more guns in more hands and if you get a little bit nervous start shooting, I think the government has a much larger responsibility in explaining when and where firearms can be used in self-defense.

I'm all for competency testing to purchase and to continue to own a gun. I'm all for a specific third-party (not hired by the seller, or the buyer, randomly assigned) psychological evaluation before purchasing and in order to continue possessing firearms.

I'm all for removing gun rights for any person who has displayed violent behavior that gets the attention of law enforcement, especially domestic violence. And when I say domestic violence, I mean by anyone in the house. You wife starts smashing your playstation controllers, cops get called, you no longer get to keep guns in that house.

I'm tentatively all for registration.

Its a terrible state of affairs when a reasonable, intelligent person sees this as a solution or step forward. Im not saying its not, its just ridiculous when the solution is obvious to the rest of the world.

Video game revenue was about twice that of firearms and ammunition last year.

Mind boggling how much money is wasted on guns. They're pretty stupid for the most part because they don't even get used.

The kid in Dayton had an AR-15, body armor and ear protection. He was going on a rampage. Targets seem pretty random, except for his sister and her companion.

The kid in Gilroy, Calif. was reportedly spraying bullets almost aimlessly.

At a psychological level, we're obviously dealing with people who do not value human life, including their own. Just nihilism.

Funny you say that. Nietzsche is a fan favorite of those on the alt right. Richard Spencer quotes him at nearly every event he does. Trump and Mcconell in many ways express nihilism by rejecting science and democracy, fanning the flames of racism, and having absolutely no moral bearing. They’ve muddied the waters by claiming that “both sides are fine people” and equate western democracy as being just as bad as Russia. There is no moral right or wrong in the Republican Party. That has been replaced with loyalty or disloyalty to trump.

Really, when you think of it, we’ve been on this path for a long time. Ayn Rand and libertarianism put us on this path. Paul Ryan attacking government programs like education, health care, etc that helped people. Rejecting climate change after the Obama v McCain 2008 election. It’s clear that the GOP has been undergoing a metamorphosis in rejecting the values of the enlightenment in that science and human life matters. At some point we need to recognize that science, new deal democracy, and valuing human life is beneficial to society.

But as long as our leaders only care about money, nothing is going to change. Trump will be back to tweeting hate by Wednesday.
