Dude did not honor the team. He prepped for games by reading spy novels, and wanted to shoot more threes despite his mediocre clip.

The irony is that if he had stuck to what made him great, he could have hustled that team to the Finals. His ability to affect the game with deflections, steals, blocks, rebounds, and hustle plays was elite. Instead, he was more concerned with touches. And when he didn't get them, his ****ing vacation plans.

You do not retire his number for that ****. He already got more than enough compensation.

I think there are some candidates but questionable if any are sure fire. Numbered but not meant to be a measure as who is better than in each catagory. My guess is Favors is the frontrunner of this list though I feel it should be Williams.

Ak was with the team a long time. Those are total stats. He shouldn't automatically make the list just for having played for the team a long time.

There are tons of players who had their numbers retired for being long time with one team. And it is not automatically for just playing long time ( maybe Collison in OKC fits that category as his 5pt, 5 reb stats certainly do not deserve it)... AK though is in top 5 in 5 major stats lists.

So folks saying no to Deron and AK, but already saying yes to Mitchell and Gobert, are saying that from 1999 to now or in the next few years, the Jazz have had no players worthy of honoring? Silly.

Maybe a compromise is put up a banner for the team that made the WCF In I think 2007. That way you recognize players like Deron, AK, Memo, etc without retiring the numbers.

Though it would really be weird to see someone else wear 8, 47, 13, etc.

Horny was great but not rafters great. True Jazz fans don't need his number retired to remember him and his one legged importance and trick shots.

It’s super rational realism! I loved AK on the Jazz. So fun to watch when not pouting. Top 5 for me when he tried and went after it. He coulda been a contender! He coulda been somebody!

He complained about touches and having no plays run for him, so Sloan, in an attempt to make him happy, designed and ran four plays a game for him. When it became painfully obvious that AK couldn't score from those plays, usually ending with a TO, Sloan decided that giving 4 more possessions a game to the opponent was too high a price for AK's happiness.

Rightfully so, he was the only max player on the team, was called face of Utah Jazz by Miller on the day his max was signed and yet 2 years later he was treated like a rookie by Sloan. Use me or trade me that was his offer to Jazz after 2007 when he won European championship and MVP title. Yet Miller and Sloan sat him down and talked him into staying while promising him a different treatment. And AK compromised and stayed while accepting limited role instead of pulling Davis, Irwing, George or some other butt hurt star. The hate he gets from some fans here is super irrational.

If you feel his getting upset is his prerogative, then that's great. For a lot of us it's a non-starter, though, because we believe whether or not someone could do something rather than should do something are two very different things, and what one must often do to win is have their efforts transcend more than just their individual desires and look at the bigger picture. I mean, yeah, he didn't get to be a huge part of the offense or a guy getting all the credit like he had in years past with less talented teammates, but he was in the WCF, with a chance to sniff the finals (which would have been easy money championship) and he showed what he weighed as more important.

So we can make an argument all day long about whether it can be rationalized that he can preserve his self-interests, but for the rest of us it's about the success of the team and we're only interested in the success of the individual inasmuch as the latter is secondary to the former.

People make excuses for Tracy McGrady caring about himself and not being a true winner. He just didn't have the mentality.
People make excuses for Dwight Howard. He doesn't have the mentality, either.
AK is cut from the same cloth.

If AK were here posting and pleading his case for having his number retired, I'd tell him that here on Jazzfanz, nobody gets a free pass.
I think overall AK was appreciated and we liked having him here, but you have to take the good with the bad. He was distracted, wasn't always mentally all in for the games, and fans can see that. He did some awesome stuff, and was rewarded with a huge contract that he didn't live up to.

IMO there were 2 things AK could have done that would have given him all Jazz fans for life.
1- Gave it his all on the court and for the team. (Not complaining or pouting even if life's not fair, not booking travel during a playoff series)
2- Live up to the huge contract that became an albatross for the team because he ended up not being worth it. If he actually lived up to it and killed it like he really could have... All Jazz Fans 4life!
