He would? I think this is a total misconception. Sloan was a tough-nosed player. The Jazz teams were good defensively when he had guys like Malone, Eaton and Stockton. But Sloan never took a team of weak or average defenders and made them significantly better. Offensively, yes, Sloan's system made average players good and turned good players into all-stars. But I have never been impresssed with Jerry's defensive strategy/schemes.

He can try all his wants, but his size doesn't help. Really wasn't a fighter on the boards either-- not like Kanter at least. Utah was one of the worst rebounding teams in 2010/11. Kanter's presence can only help.

Thank you! Sloan had great defensive teams. In the nineties Sloan got defense out of a crippled Horny and an out of shape Ostertag.
Recent teams struggled to play defense, but in his 20+ years of coaching, Sloan usually had good defensive teams.

Sloans defensive philosophy was always to pack in the paint leaving perimeter shooters open and hack the hell out of the opponent players. Not surprisingly Jazz were always "leaders" in the league in opponents 3pt% and FT% attempts. It worked much better in nineties before Stern decided to raise scoring and no hand to body contact was allowed to use anymore. Thats when Sloan failed to adjust and since 2000 Jazz were never a good defensive team.

Wow, I have to admit that I agree with you on this subject. The NBA changed how the game was called and Sloan didn't do enough about it to keep the Jazz as a top defensive team. All those 3 pointers and free throws have hurt the Jazz at crucial times in the last few years.
