Yeah, I'll hit up the pet peeve thread but it has become a huge pet peeve of mine when people tell me "What the media won't tell you..." and "What nobody is talking about..." or "Everyone is outraged about this but no one cares about X..." when The media is telling us, what people are talking about, and what people do care about.
 
I think the issue here is that American right since Nixon has provoked white resentment. It was a cheap and easy way to win votes from the south from angry segregationists.

Reagan used evangelicals and exploited their fears of losing power to a more secular society.

Since 2009, Republicans have given up outreach. They're not even pretending to care about civil rights or equality. As their party has shrunk and has become more homogeneous, they've become more extreme in their rhetoric and more absurd in their victimhood.

While Democrats have used victimhood in the past, I think their use of it has legitimacy. Women and minorities are treated unequally. Republicans meanwhile, exploit white resentment to pretend that they're somehow losing power by sharing it more broadly. Even today, you see Republicans bitching about the government, despite having unparalleled power for years. Even today, you hear them whining about social issues, despite still largely clinging to power.

There is some truth to that. I’d guess much of that is a (not knee-jerk) reaction to the victimhood always claimed and perpetuated by the left though.

Maybe. We all do stuff like that, hardly realizing our reaction.

Probably a reasonable analysis in the context of dedicated believer in socialism using the term "covidiots" for a noncompliant state. yah yah. Sweden has some more or less socialist policies generally, but they are pretty good on their concept of being a sovereign nation with the right to make their own policies sometimes.

I have followed their track a bit in the covid policies.

I think a reasonable take on their experiment with "herd immunity" teaches us a cautionary view about achieving "herd immunity" to this pathogen. Already there are a number of strains with some distinct differences that might mean we need multiple vaccines or a combo of vaccines, and that vaccinations may offer only short-term benefits.

besides politics, what do you believe triggers our use of epithets like "covidiots"??

He was saying that people who didn't think it was a good idea to shut some businesses down were idiots.
There were democrats who didn't want to shut things down. There were Republicans who didn't want to shut things down. There were people who are neither republican or Democrat who didn't want to shut things down.

Those are the people he was referring to. People who didn't want to shut things down.

I don't see wanting to shut things down or not wanting to as political.

OK, so without trying to analyze standard fare offerings from our media, I'll try to get back on track with a rational sort of discussion.

Seasonal effects appear to be proving valid by outbreaks in the Southern Hemisphere now. Sweden might be an exception that proves the rule, as people emerge from nicely chlorinataed saunas and roam about. Sunlight ranks about as effective as disinfectants or oxidizers like chlorine, but after a day hiking .... very long days at that..... popping into a drinking establishment for a drink.... as powerful as alcohol is against the virus, people are just too tired to really get the maximum dose required. So they're out and passing the covid around. But I really think all that is pretty near nonsense compared to the real possibility there are just some new strains making new waves.
 
There's a difference between conservatives claiming they're victimized because of their ideology, and progressives who's ideology includes justice for marginalized communities.
