Tough Day To Be In Law Enforcement

What if blackout drunks never drove?

I don't see how changing police procedure changes this.

You can point the finger and worry about cops not being safe but I'd bet my life that cops arresting drunk drivers saves more lives, by a vast amount, than bad cops who take lives like George Floyd.

I agree with arresting drunk drivers. Our difference is whether it is better to arrest them on the scene in addition to impounding the car, or impound the car now and arrest them later. If you have evidence that arresting the drivers at the scene saves lives, I'll read it.

If the cops could be trusted, they could give them a ride where they could be accompanied.

This is where social workers could help. They could accompany drunk with Uber. Uber wouldn't have a reason to not allow then.

Possibly, but the easiest solution that is used sometimes is just to have the person get someone to pick them up. Call a friend or family member. If they can't then you consider other options.

My dad drove drunk many times... picked up a bunch of DUIs which he would claim were BS every time. Many times as kids my older brother and I were in the car as he drove up Provo Canyon to his house. It was scary as hell.

Finally he got like 90 days on one of the DUIs and had to go to AA again. He never did it again and has straightened out his life, but it was a miracle he never hurt us or anyone else. I think being soft on DUI enforcement will not change the behavior.

In other news... if you are a drunk do not own and operate a bar... it will destroy much of your life.

Why does it matter where they sober up? People can get drunk as soon as they sober up. A day in the jail changes nothing.

I don't know, man. If a drunk guy gets arrested for doing something illegal, I don't think locking 'em up is a bad idea.

I'm sure that takes a few hours. While they may not be completely sober it's enough time to start sobering up.

What's wrong with that?
There's nothing wrong with that.

But it doesn't take hours. You've seen the bail bonds billboards (say that three times fast), right? You call them, they pay the bail, you walk out the front door. Minutes, not hours.

I honestly have no idea how any of that works.

I just don't see why arresting drunk drivers is a bad idea because things could escalate.

I don't necessarily think it's a bad idea, I just think it is really necessary.

It's not illegal to be drunk, it's illegal to be drunk and drive a car. Once you've removed the driver from the car and have the evidence you need to charge them I don't see a significant benefit in taking them to jail.

I don't blame cops for doing it because current policy in Utah is that every DUI goes to jail. But I think it's worth reconsidering as we look at policing reforms.

I think arresting them on the spot shows that drinking and driving is not tolerated and is very serious and will be a process to recover from.
