What's new

Let’s try another angle: Biden vs TrumpISM

It is mindboggling to me that Democrats had 4 years to learn from their mistakes and still could not come up with decent candidate. Is Biden really the best they could find?

What I'm seeing is that old man Trump can't say anything about old man Biden that can't be said about him x10. Biden actually cuts off many lanes of attack Trump might otherwise use. He can't really blow his dog whistle to rouse up the misogynists and racists against Biden.

Biden is uninspiring, but I think the DNC wanted him because there's no dirt to be had on him, no surprises and no way to invent stories about him that would be credible.

John Feffer: what will it take to defeat Trumpism?

“While Trump may be expendable, Trumpism -- which lies at the intersections of racial and sexual anxiety, hatred of government and the expert class, and opposition to cosmopolitan internationalism -- is not so easily rooted out. Drawing heavily on American traditions of Know-Nothing-ism, America-First-ism, and Goldwater Republicanism, Trump’s essential worldview will survive the 2020 election.”

Interesting. I don’t think this is wrong. However, Trumpism will be crippled if it loses control of the White House and senate and continues to lose local elections.Young people aren’t into Trumpism as much as boomers. As demographics change, so will politics.

I believe McConnell making sure the Federalist Society controls the composition of our federal courts, to the degree it has up to this point, may have something to say about how that equation plays out. As our nation grows more diverse, our federal courts grow more reactionary. Potentially some strife filled decades ahead.

This just speaks to how impotent, corrupt, and inbred our political world has become in the US. Just like everything else eventually settles in the package that provides the "biggest bang for the buck"..like how all cell phones basically look the same, all car makers are making small SUVs that all look the same, etc. etc. For politics they have learned that to achieve their goal of getting (re)elected they need a clone of the same guy that has been elected every damn time except one in the history of our country. Old white males are presidents. They have few good new ideas. Working with the other side doesn't guarantee the vote, so rile up the constituency instead. Toe the party line. These things get results...i.e. winning the vote. That is all the results they look for any more. Not to make any real change, or help society, or do the best they can for the public. The result that matters is getting elected and the best chance at that is an old white male who is close enough to center to get the votes to win, while still toeing the party line when it matters and basically doing nothing in the hopes of maintaining enough votes to win again. Change is unpopular, no matter how you slice it, so change risks losing votes. So avoid change and get re-elected. We have created this cess-pool of a system, and like a run-away freight train there is slim likelihood of stopping it or changing direction until the crash.

He’s proven he can drink a glass of water with one hand. That’s inspiring. Let’s see if he can walk down a ramp quickly.

Guis, I think if we put kindling and a match to the established rule of law, then sensationalism in the media with simmer down. Vote Trump.

Yeah, we just need to wait for the boomers to die.

(Checks last year of baby boom and birth year) Gulp!

I don’t see this as an indictment on the system so much as it is on the electorate. 2016 was the year of the change and disruption candidate, not 2020. There were 12+ professional politicians to choose from in 2015-2016. Republicans rejected all of them in favor of disruption because Obama’s administration was too boring. Some on the left voted for Trump because Clinton was just too “status quo.”

After 4 years of disruption, people yearn for a sense of normalcy and stability. Biden is a familiar face and provides voters with a sense of normalcy and stability. That’s why he won while others of great capacity and a more progressive vision were rejected.

People rant about “the system” all the time without mentioning specifics. Do they want a shorter campaign season? Restrictions on super PACS? Abolish the electoral college? Adopt proportional state voting? If people want to change the system, then let’s talk about what's wrong with it and what the possible solutions are. If the issue is more a problem with a low information narcissistic consumer electorate, then would any changes to the system really fix anything?

Moreso. The media has gone completely bat **** crazy.
Trump has contributed greatly to the craziness of the media.
A vote for Trump this year is a vote for the media to continue to be crazy...... Crazier even.

The media loves trump being president. They have never had so much to talk about before and are getting more clicks than ever thanks to trump.

If you don't like the media then vote for boring Biden. The media would hate that.

So then vote for Trump again, who has done nothing but inflame the media’s bias toward sensationalism. Got it. Who’s the candidate in 2024 who will get us closer to the apogee?

I bet Biden wins so who knows. Republicans run on restoring a fiscal house and democrats tell us how terrible our lives are?

They prefer to crash the country to increase their odds in next election.
That’s why they passed a 3 trillion dollar recovery bill. And proposed more recovery money only to be blocked by McConnell.

Come on, be serious.

i wish. They are the most fiscally Irresponsible party ever. With a strong economy they ran trillion dollar deficits.
I don't think he was speaking to this particular administration. The post he was responding to was in reference to 2024 iirc.

I know it was in 2016. Is the protest in 2020 the same basic protest?

Not sure anyone really believes "Trump is The Answer".

Pretty sure a lot of Americans frustrated about jobs gone over the border, or workers flooding in to displace their jobs here, voted for Trump.

Pretty sure some true believers in "American Exceptionalism", the US Constitution, have been voting against the CFR lineup of new world order enablers for years.

Damn sure a lot of people just hated Hillary.

Pretty sure the media is still influential enough to get out a substantial number of Trump dissidents over one damn issue or another, and pretty sure quite a lot of voters seeing the news are just so disgusted with the hype they are feeling literally stampeded into voting against all that anti-Trump ****.

That all adds up to this 2020 being the wildest demonstration against Establishment politics ever. 70% PLUS voting, in their view, against the way things are. The other 30% of the vote will be split as well, half for programmed change, and half for programmed stability.

Trump got rolled, and his base is still reeling in shock. More people will vote for him because they believe the "high rollers" are the worst.
