[Woj] Donovan Mitchell signs 5/195M max designated rookie extension with the Jazz

There shouldn’t be this much money in sports, period. If sports are a way to make the everyday lives of citizens a little better, then have cities own the teams, stop wildly inflating ticket prices, and broadcast games on local television.

Billions of dollars a year could be used towards materially improving the world instead of making billionaires and millionaires more money, and using taxpayer money to build stadiums.

But yeah, players should get a fair share for sure. Ain’t nothing fair about anybody making that kind of money though, at least not while we face the most dire, existential threat to the planet in the entire anthropocene and can hardly seem to muster any resources to try and stop it.

$163,000,000 guaranteed. I love the game but the money is just absurd. Not saying he doesn't deserve it and obviously the owners can afford it but minimum wage is still only $7.25/hour. I think minimum wage was around $5/hour in the late 80's. I saw this morning that the number of Americans struggling to feed themselves has gone from 10 million to 30 million since the start of coronavirus. Sorry to be a downer and happy for Donovan's success but it's just shocking how much disparity there is, especially compared to about 40 years ago.
I don't think you have to apologize for anything. I think your post is spot on. America should be embarrassed with the income inequality that has existed in the country for too long. I am so happy for DM he deserves it and has worked on his game and shown that he is a franchise type player.

If you don't want money is sports, turn it off, stop watching it, go for a walk, knit.

But, if you and millions of others DO participate, those who make it available, from the owners, to the players, to the janitors at the stadium deserve the increase from the money they generate.

Interestingly, the argument could be made that we have already hit peak sports and the money WILL come down from here. Esports are more accessible and the physical lottery part of the equation becomes more "democratized." I don't get it, but my kids would rather watch the Minecraft PVP championships than the NBA finals.

I'm done taking communism in a thread that should be celebrating Donovan Mitchell, though.

I think it's entirely possible to be happy for Donovan/the Jazz and to simultaneously recognize the gross inequality of the system we operate within. Humans are good at dividing life into little baskets that don't really meet each other (keeping sports separated from our politics, economic views, for example). This is probably a necessary part of being human, to an extent. We'd probably go crazy otherwise. But trying to keep things continually separated is a mistake, I think. We need reminders that reality is not so clean as the baskets we invent for ourselves.

So I'll cheer as a Jazz/Donovan fan for this contract, recognizing that he's doing well within the system that exists (and is likely to continue), while also appreciating the reminder that there's something rotten with the system.

I agree with Numby -- if we had a system where everyone's basic needs were provided -- then the income inequality would not be as consequential. Instead, we have a capitalistic system where hierarchies are created in which people can take advantage of their privileges and obtain far more than they could ever use -- think Bezos, Gates, Koch, Waltons. The only people who would not benefit from a socialist economy are those who are taking away the fruits of labor from the rest of us, and in many cases causing irreparable damage to our world -- think wars, gun sales, pesticides and pharmaceutical drugs. The only way to end this is to transform our economic system. Yes, Karl Marx was right, though I don't believe his ideal of a communist society is feasible, at least not until the human races evolves much further.

I propose we move the discussion about the "obscene money" to the Haywood new contract thread. Yes, sure, world is not right. But at least Donovan seems like a person who will do plenty of good with that money and will try to give back to community.
Good post

Thank you to those that are pointing out the income inequality. I am super happy for Donovan and the Jazz and am celebrating this signing. However this is an important discussion to have, especially on a sports fan forum.

As fans, we should keep in mind that sports are a way of pacifying the masses. The Romans did this many years ago. Instead, we as a society should look at and learn from the players union. Look at the income growth in player contracts from the 1980s to now, and compare that to the (lack of) income growth for 99% of Americans. There is no good reason why our salaries should not be keeping up, proportionately, with the growth in player contracts.

It is great to be a sports fan, but please don’t let your fandom serve as an escape from being part of the Republic. Ours is a nation by the people and for the people, and while we are a million miles from actualizing that it is possible. We can be fans and engaged citizens.

Go Jazz, and Go United States!

Pretty great idea tbh.
Nope. If it's a new idea or an outside the box idea then it's bad and un-patriotic and un-American.
There was a time when this country was innovative, progressive, and welcomed change and new ideas.
Those days are in the past. More same ol same ol please.
