[Woj] Donovan Mitchell signs 5/195M max designated rookie extension with the Jazz

If you don't want money is sports, turn it off, stop watching it, go for a walk, knit.

But, if you and millions of others DO participate, those who make it available, from the owners, to the players, to the janitors at the stadium deserve the increase from the money they generate.

Interestingly, the argument could be made that we have already hit peak sports and the money WILL come down from here. Esports are more accessible and the physical lottery part of the equation becomes more "democratized." I don't get it, but my kids would rather watch the Minecraft PVP championships than the NBA finals.

I'm done taking communism in a thread that should be celebrating Donovan Mitchell, though.

I think it's entirely possible to be happy for Donovan/the Jazz and to simultaneously recognize the gross inequality of the system we operate within. Humans are good at dividing life into little baskets that don't really meet each other (keeping sports separated from our politics, economic views, for example). This is probably a necessary part of being human, to an extent. We'd probably go crazy otherwise. But trying to keep things continually separated is a mistake, I think. We need reminders that reality is not so clean as the baskets we invent for ourselves.

So I'll cheer as a Jazz/Donovan fan for this contract, recognizing that he's doing well within the system that exists (and is likely to continue), while also appreciating the reminder that there's something rotten with the system.

I agree with Numby -- if we had a system where everyone's basic needs were provided -- then the income inequality would not be as consequential. Instead, we have a capitalistic system where hierarchies are created in which people can take advantage of their privileges and obtain far more than they could ever use -- think Bezos, Gates, Koch, Waltons. The only people who would not benefit from a socialist economy are those who are taking away the fruits of labor from the rest of us, and in many cases causing irreparable damage to our world -- think wars, gun sales, pesticides and pharmaceutical drugs. The only way to end this is to transform our economic system. Yes, Karl Marx was right, though I don't believe his ideal of a communist society is feasible, at least not until the human races evolves much further.

I propose we move the discussion about the "obscene money" to the Haywood new contract thread. Yes, sure, world is not right. But at least Donovan seems like a person who will do plenty of good with that money and will try to give back to community.
Good post

Thank you to those that are pointing out the income inequality. I am super happy for Donovan and the Jazz and am celebrating this signing. However this is an important discussion to have, especially on a sports fan forum.

As fans, we should keep in mind that sports are a way of pacifying the masses. The Romans did this many years ago. Instead, we as a society should look at and learn from the players union. Look at the income growth in player contracts from the 1980s to now, and compare that to the (lack of) income growth for 99% of Americans. There is no good reason why our salaries should not be keeping up, proportionately, with the growth in player contracts.

It is great to be a sports fan, but please don’t let your fandom serve as an escape from being part of the Republic. Ours is a nation by the people and for the people, and while we are a million miles from actualizing that it is possible. We can be fans and engaged citizens.

Go Jazz, and Go United States!

Pretty great idea tbh.
Nope. If it's a new idea or an outside the box idea then it's bad and un-patriotic and un-American.
There was a time when this country was innovative, progressive, and welcomed change and new ideas.
Those days are in the past. More same ol same ol please.

Maybe they were undervalued in 1980? Everyone votes on their salary by watching the games (ad revenue), attending games (ticket revenue), and memorabilia sales. If you find it too obscene, it's fine to walk away. I know plenty of people who have walked away and have disdain for professional sports in their current form. When enough people do it, their salaries will come back down.! Amazing! You can still be a basketball fan, just follow your favorite high school, college, or G league team.

I'm really happy for Donovan and the Jazz, ---- so US the Fanzzz. I remember him when he came here after Gordon Coward leave us with smile and nothing.
Donovan was committed from the day one. Now is the day to celebrate, we have got a star to build a team around.

The other subject is the trend that NBA STARS when things don't go their way just want a trade. Look many now and in the past. They should give back money back for not finish the business. Hope that Donovan will be fair to US and won't leave for NY or others after two years when we won't be winning.

Donovan is lucky that he is getting an extension now. I predict in the next 5 years, especially when the next TV deal has to be made, that the profit the NBA is making will be severely reduced. The NBA is already starting to have problems due to COVID. And shoving their political opinions down people's throat are definitely going to heavily impact the next few years. This is most likely why the Millers sold the organization.

I think the BRI clause in the CBA addressed that the contract amounts are adjusted in the case that BRI falls, so these may not be the real numbers the players get. I quit following the CBA and all these fine details. This is just what I read elsewhere, but it sounds right. I would say owners aren't all willing to lose that much money. Somebody spoon feed us a link to confirm or disprove this.

The NBA is still a global game where there are only 450 players. That's less than 10 NFL teams. Even if the revenue drops a little, I doubt it goes backwards.

But your point is valid. We can't go overboard with contracts. This one is bigger than I thought it would be.

Don is hugely marketable. Rudy just isn't. I'll be shocked if the FO gives Rudy a similar contract unless the new owner was brought in with these massive team salaries being part of the deal the first few years.
