Coronavirus

My mom just tested positive. She's 55 and in great shape so I'm not too worried. Just has cold like symptoms so far.

I think their mistrust is mostly based on a media that has proven itself incredibly biased and willing to hide the truth.
You mean, as opposed to all those politicians, preachers, and protestors telling them they just need to catch the virus to develop herd immunity (which is not how you ever get to herd immunity)?

But not the media that you watch/read though right?
Your media is unbiased and honest I'm sure.

I miss the good ol days back when America was great (at least according to maga folks anyways) when all we had was mainstream media and we all pretty much agreed that what we saw on the news was true and we were all getting our news from the same place (the mainstream media)

Today's multifaceted and bloated media just leads to a million different "facts" and "truths" and nobody agrees about anything anymore.

It is funny though that the maga cult hate the mainstream media while at the same time wish that america was "great" like it was back when mainstream media had a monopoly on news.

My mom is cranky and not feeling well, but doing good. Her symptoms came in a hurry but they’ve stabilized and she hasn’t gotten any worse over the last 36 hours or so.

One of her best friends is a different story. Her mother died, and her daughter-in-law came to the funeral sick. Turned into a super spreader event. Their entire nuclear family got it and all of the kids spouses… And now my mom‘s friend is being moved to the ICU today.

This is the closest one for me that has gotten serious. I grew up two houses away.

All media has bias. Sometimes that bias becomes so great that they blatantly misinform their listeners. It is a major disservice to the public. It does not surprise me that the more they are caught in obvious lies, the less that the public tends to trust them. We would all be better off with a much better and more transparent media. I think things are unfortunately headed in the opposite direction. We are getting a more biased and arrogant media who believes that it is their role to adjust the facts to fit the narrative that they want to promote.

We will get the media we ask for. Reuters, the Associated Press, and NPR are all still around, and still putting out content that is largely unbiased. If we choose to ignore them for MSNBC/Fox/etc., then we are choosing the biased media over the unbiased.

Sorry bro, but you're a Trumptard and as such have zero ability to discern between fact and fiction. Don't blame the media.

It's been a while to recover so now I'll tell my experience.

First off, I caught it at work. When people say that it's not transmitting in universities, colleges, and schools, they're mostly incorrect. When community spread is low, sure, then school is safe. But not when it isn't, which is most of the United States now. The only place I could have caught it is at work (school)... And I'm pretty sure who gave it to me as well. We were both wearing masks, mostly social distanced, and were only in the same room for maybe 15 mins. But it's also spread through the air so unless I was breathing through a scuba mask, I'm not sure how I wouldn't have been infected...

Anyway, it was in mid-November. The few days prior to really "getting sick", I had troubles sleeping and then was tired throughout the day. I figured it was just a problem with my lack of sleep. Apparently, insomnia is a symptom. This began Fridayish. By Monday I felt like I had a very mild cold. So this "Mild Cold Monday" is where my first week of being sick with covid begins. Out of caution, I got tested. IHC has waiting lists of 2-3 days. At the earliest, I would've been tested at IHC Wednesday afternoon and then another 2 days for the results... So essentially a week... I looked at every IHC location along the wasatch front and it was all the same. I instead went to Premier Diagnostics because Google told me they were a thing. I had to register online (took 5 minutes) and then get in line at a nearby location. I arrived early and waited in line before they opened for about 45 minutes. I did the saliva test. I went home to relax. I've heard that they are now doing the nostril test where they circle your nostrils with a Q tip. Apparently it's easier than the one where they poke your brain and the saliva. I found the saliva test to be pretty easy although it took me a while to fill up the tube. You're not supposed to drink 30 mins prior to taking the test so my mouth was a little dry.
  • By Tuesday night I was feeling slightly better and thought it was just a very mild cold that had been defeated by rest, zinc, and lots of water. My test came out positive. Went to bed early that night and my symptoms continued to go up and down. I never had a fever. But I sometimes had aches, sometimes had fatigue, and sometimes felt pretty much normal.
  • Throughout that first week I experienced light cold symptoms, diarrhea, and vertigo (that was weird). Sometimes they were strong and other times very mild. While my sleeping had improved (I could actually fall asleep now), I discovered that I'd wake up every morning at 3am wired and couldn't fall back to sleep for 2 hours on the dot. Id then have to sleep in until 9 or 10.
  • On Thursday I experienced my first and only chest tightening and my blood oxygen levels dropped to the lowest they'd ever go, 92 percent. It felt like a 500 lbs person was stepping slowly down on my chest. It was horrifying. Those who have stronger battles with covid than me really have my sympathy. The feeling of your chest tightening and being unable to breathe gave me a sense of real panic that I haven’t had many times in my life. I downed some mucinex, nasal spray, and took a hot shower. Also, laying on your stomach helps!
  • By the second week the aches had mostly gone away but I began to slowly lose my smell and taste. Diarrhea and vertigo were gone thankfully and I was sleeping better but the pressure in my sinuses had increased. I suffered mostly from headaches and sinus pain in that second week.
  • A few days into the second week my smell and taste were shot. I could sense salt, sugar, and if something was acidic. But I couldn't tell what it was. It was real weird. It's still real weird. I went to Apollo Burger a few days ago and while french fries tasted normal the cheese and meat on the burger was still fairly tasteless.
  • A few days into the second week I couldn't focus on work for more than about 3 minutes. I'd try to read and couldn't remember what I had read a paragraph before. I had repeat conversations with my wife. I knew I'd asked her something but I couldn't remember what I had asked and I couldn't remember how she responded. I couldn't remember the day of the week. This brain fog continued for probably about 2 weeks after they began in that 2nd week of covid. This along with the breathing issue I had in the first week was probably the most troubling symptoms I had. Honestly, it has taken most of December for the brain fog to clear up. Following conversations at work was real difficult. I still leave words out of sentences when writing.
  • In that second week cold symptoms went away. But sinus pressure increased, smell and taste senses disappeared, cognitive impairment (brain fog) set in, I also felt the fatigue really took a toll. I slept a lot more. The fatigue lasted from Thanksgiving to maybe a few days ago. I slept in a lot more and felt exhausted by 7:00pm. I couldn’t walk more than half a mile before needing a break.
  • By now I've mostly returned to normal with the exception of my smell and taste. My taste is probably at 50 percent while smell is still pretty awful. I had to get up close to things to smell them.
  • My wife experienced mild symptoms as well but her test came out negative. By the second week she was back to normal and working from home while I essentially had dementia, slept a lot, and couldn't smell/taste anything.
Covid isn't a ****ing joke.

However, this was pretty funny. Around Thanksgiving I had clearly lost my smell and taste. I wanted to know how bad it was so I opened a jar from the fridge of minced garlic. This stuff is pretty potent. I huffed it like an elementary kid huffs glue and couldn't sense anything. I huffed it for probably about 30 seconds until my nose began to burn. I then had a runny nose from burning my nose's insides for about 20 minutes after. lol

Stay healthy and get the ****ing vaccine as soon as you can. I'm a 35 year old "healthy" person and this "mild" case took me down for a solid 2 weeks. The fatigue and brain fog lasted for a month. And here we are more than a month along and my smell and taste are still pitiful.

Even if it were to hit 2k deaths everyday from now until the end of the year, which is unlikely given that it oscillates (yesterday for example had 1460 deaths), that would be roughly 342k deaths which is still way short of 480k.

Also, you are an idiot if thinking that wearing a mask is going to stop the death count this winter. My 85+ year old grandpa who is as socially distanced as it gets (lives by himself and doesn't go out), got covid at a clinic when he was getting an unrelated surgery done. And everybody at the clinic is wearing a ****ing mask, sanitizing ****, etc. But did that stop my grandpa from getting covid? No. And you have the audacity to tell me that I think it's a joke. You truly are a living piece of walking garbage.

Luckily my grandpa survived covid and also good that he doesn't have to be a number in your dumbass liberal fearmongering. The correct way to lower the death count is by making sure those that are more vulnerable are protected ( i.e. they need to socially distance from people, masks aren't going to do ****) and also make sure that during this winter the vulnerable aren't going to any unnecessary doctor appointments or areas/buildings where covid will be prevalent. It's not Trump's responsibility to impose federal mandates such as wearing a mask or doing curfews from 10pm to 5am that won't do **** to stop the problem.

Also, I'm supposed to be on your ignore list, so don't conveniently respond when you think you are going to be right, when you are still wrong. You piece of ****.

Experts warned that we'd see 3,000 deaths per day this winter. And look at where we are.

We'll be near 350,000 deaths by the end of this year and will certainly be over 400,000 by February... Like exactly what the experts predicted. Your takeaway shouldn't be to lash out at me, downplay the virus, or to otherwise double down on your stubbornness. Your takeaway should be two-fold, first, to try listening to experts next time instead of berating them because your crappy news sources preach distrust in experts and institutions and secondly to find better news sources. Fox news, Newsmax, OAN, Ben Shapiro, Rush, Turning Point, and Facebook aren't reliable news sources. NPR, the NY Times, and The Post are. They have proper vetting of material so while they do make mistakes and do have a bias, they're minimized because of the vetting. The worst thing you can do is double down in your stupidity. Then you learn nothing and continue in ignorance.

For those of you interested, this is from my own spreadsheet:

And vaccines are on their way! Although, the St. George area has really struggled to administer their vaccines. Compare them to Davis County. I'm not a health expert, I'm just a monkey that types stuff into spreadsheets, so I don't know why. Maybe being more rural has something to do with it?
