What's new

The official "let's impeach Trump" thread

Serious or joshing? If serious, why?

I can kind of understand the physical ground argument against DC as a state, but don't really think it outweighs the # of people in DC. PR I don't think there's any serious argument to not extend an offer of statehood.
Especially when you consider the populations of the two Dakotas is

1.5 million

yet they have 4 senators.

the combined population of DC and PR is:

4 million

Yet they have 0 senators.

Culturally, what’s different between the two Dakotas? What makes it necessary for them to have 4 voices?

I'm from South Dakota, I'm well aware.

Just to note a few differences on the Dakotas for the curious: South Dakota is an ag/tourist state, while North Dakota is a oil/ag state. SD has a notably higher native population. The Black Hills in South Dakota are certainly the most interesting largescale geographic feature in either state, otherwise both are mostly prairie. I'd say North Dakota's economy is overall stronger. South Dakota has no income tax. Both have the majority of the population on the eastern side of the state. Slightly more small towns in South Dakota, more of North Dakota lives in their larger towns. Neither state has any cities to speak of, Fargo and Sioux Falls are the two largest both a bit under 250k, no other towns come close in size (Bismarck/Rapid the centers of the Western parts of the state and about 75k each). Hmm... anything notable I'm forgetting, think that's all for now.

I guess I’m very naive. I’ll never really understand how men so easily and willingly dishonor themselves. I’m not in their shoes, but I would like to think that, if I were, I would be concerned with being labeled a dishonorable coward by History. Sure, I’ll long be dead, but it’s my name. My name is worth something. And honor is everything. Don’t they realize that? Honor is everything. Can’t take anything with me, but I can take my good name, and I can preserve my honor. Someone like Lindsey Graham, to name but one, nah, not so much.

Cashing in on honor is an uphill climb.

But cashing in on power and coddling gets you 40 years in the Senate.

Term limits, people - you should get two 6 year terms and out the door. Or three 4 years, whatever.

Nobody should be a lifelong policy maker.

It's pretty stupid to see the news media pretend like anything Trump's defense team says will actually make a difference. They literally could flip the entire Senate off and said that Trump wanted them all massacred and 45 Republicans would still vote to get him off because they don't want to anger their ****** voters and be primaried. Pretty sad.

I'm also finding it a self fulfilling prophecy:

1. Republican officials fail to stand up to Trump out of fear of the mob.
2. As a result, Trump and his followers become more emboldened and more misinformed.
3. Republican officials fail to stand up to Trump out of fear of the mob.

Republicans aren't ever going to break this cycle until they stand up to Trump and set their voters straight. They'll stay enslaved to Trump as long as they fail to fight back.
Which is why the rest of us sane and responsible Americans need to keep the mob and their politicians the hell away from government.
Great post

“This is psychopathy,” former Trump aide Sebastian Gorka said on Sean Spicer’s Newsmax show. “Trump Derangement Syndrome is a clinical condition.”

“I just wonder if it’s covered under Obamacare,” quipped Spicer, Trump’s first press secretary.

“It’s a progressive disease, in ever[y] sense of the word, and end stage is particularly devoid of wit and full of venom,” tweetedpro-Trump commentator Hugh Hewitt. “Pray for the afflicted. Really.”

If you ever want to turn their words against them, below is an image of end stage Trump Derangement Syndrome. One of hundreds to choose from.....

Puerto Rico has more population than 20 states.* It deserves to be a state in its own right. I'm with you on DC though--make it part of Maryland, which donated the land for DC in the first place.

I kind of understand why DC isn't a state - they wanted it to be almost neutral territory, and there are concerns that a governor could exert their power to shut down the federal government, quite literally.

OK, fine, but give the residents the same representation as a state - 2 Senators, and X Representatives depending on population.

It has less population than North Dakota, South Dakota, and Alaska (although more than Vermont and Wyoming). And is only 68 square miles which is 1/22 of the smallest state, Rhode Island. It doesn't need to be a state.

McConnell is saying that his vote is because trump is out of office. Interesting that if he were in office he would have been convicted. It is not guilty on a technicality.
McConnell would have made up some other reason if Trump were still in office. The real reason is that Trump is republican and still with a large base, not that Trump is out of office.
