He shrunk at times but the game was also different... the numbers are all a little inflated. Mailman's playoff numbers aren't hugely different than his regular season numbers. His shooting percentage dipped... choker is too strong.

I think Karl is like most players.. Don has risen to the moment which Karl didn't really seem to do.

There is three tiers:

Guys who don’t like the playoff pressure and fold:

Paul George, Khris Middleton etc.

The middle tier is almost everyone else who deals with it and plays through it.

Last tier is guys who relish the playoffs and the pressure and elevate their game:

Donovan Mitchell, LeBron James, Kevin Durant etc.

What I’m getting at is Malone is in that middle tier and Mitchell is in the upper tier.

Had Karl been a playoff monster as Donovan has been, the Jazz would have championship banners. In 1994-95 and '95-96 specifically. The years Houston won the west. In 1997 it felt like Houston said to the Jazz "you go play MJ." We did and we lost. Had we gone to the finals in the two years MJ was gone I think we go into the '97 finals with at least one chip and we face MJ with no nerves... and we win a three-peat.

For sure, a lot of variables and moving parts go into it. He was extremely lucky that him or none of his teammates ever suffered major injuries.

He had some stinker games in the Finals though. That’s what I was more or less getting at. His worst ones were most notably against us too.

Yeah if he raises his game instead of being okay we have some titles for sure. In one of those years. We should have had 98... honestly some coaching adjustments would have won us that title. Hindsight is 20/20.

Very generic and there is potential for a deeper dive there but I think it gets the point out decently.

It isn't that hard... he was a pass first guy... never missed games... brought it every night. You rack up a **** ton of assists over the years. He probably should have shot the ball 4 or 5 times more per game but that wasn't how he lived. No one will break that record. Guys don't play that way or that long.

Has the NBA awarded the DPOY award? Yesterday, they handed out the MVP award, which, IIRC, is the normally the last award given out. But I haven't seen or heard about the DPOY. Are they saving that award for a possible Jazz vs 76ers final?

All I can think is they had to do the MVP award yesterday to give it to Denver in a team setting before they scattered to the winds.

Agree with the coaching adjustments. We should have won in 97. Bulls were the better team in 97 but the Jazz outplayed them in the series, whereas in 98 the jazz were the better team but the bulls outplayed / outcoached them.

1997 - Malone choked in G1 with his missed free throws. Malone choked in G5 when he failed to box out Kukoc at the free throw line which led to the bulls hitting that go ahead 3 with a minute left. Right before Kerr hit the game winner in G6, the refs missed an obvious basket interference call by Pippen on Shandon Anderson's layup that would have put the jazz up by 2 with under a minute to go... very winnable series but Malone didn't rise to the challenge and a few unlucky coin tosses went the bulls' way.

1998 - Sloan just made some stupid decisions like giving Adam Keefe a lot of burn over the likes of Foster/Tag (at least Tag clogged the lane), and playing a one-legged Hornacek over Anderson/Morris when he was a complete liability on defense, or having whoever MJ guarded run endless actions in g6 when he was clearly gassed.. Jazz didn't take advantage of any of that.
