Game Thread Jun 08, 2021 08:00PM MT: Jazz vs. Clippers - Game 1

Added to Calendar: 06-08-21

Agree with the coaching adjustments. We should have won in 97. Bulls were the better team in 97 but the Jazz outplayed them in the series, whereas in 98 the jazz were the better team but the bulls outplayed / outcoached them.

1997 - Malone choked in G1 with his missed free throws. Malone choked in G5 when he failed to box out Kukoc at the free throw line which led to the bulls hitting that go ahead 3 with a minute left. Right before Kerr hit the game winner in G6, the refs missed an obvious basket interference call by Pippen on Shandon Anderson's layup that would have put the jazz up by 2 with under a minute to go... very winnable series but Malone didn't rise to the challenge and a few unlucky coin tosses went the bulls' way.

1998 - Sloan just made some stupid decisions like giving Adam Keefe a lot of burn over the likes of Foster/Tag (at least Tag clogged the lane), and playing a one-legged Hornacek over Anderson/Morris when he was a complete liability on defense, or having whoever MJ guarded run endless actions in g6 when he was clearly gassed.. Jazz didn't take advantage of any of that.
And who can forget 5 point swing caused by Dick Bavetta. Under todays rules they would have reviewed Eisleys and Harpers shots and we would never had Jordan heroics at the end of the game. Granted we probably would have choked in game 7 but still that injustice in game 6 is just hard to ignore.

Game 2, Clippers will double team trap Mitchell to get the ball out of his hands and make someone else beat them, hopefully the Jazz know this and will have a plan so our guys make them pay for that strategy.
They tried to last night but Don beat the first guy so bad before the second guy could get there that it didn't matter.

Trapping here and there can be effective but doubling on the perimeter is dangerous. I expect less Kennard and more Beverly/Mann. Doubling on the perimeter with our shooters might be a death sentence. It got them in trouble last series. They just need to be able to defend DM better one on one and get help at the rim. There is a price for being small too. Doubling Don on the perimeter while being small is likely not the answer.

I smell Bogey cookin' 40.
Rudy could get 20 in that scenario too. Maybe the clippers perimeter defenders have just fallen off a cliff... they should be able to guard guys straight up without bleeding points.

I think whenever Mike comes back, that he should be able to break the pain enough that Gobert should be open for the lob always.

Good point.
I agree.

Here's some good stuff:

"They were playing desperation ball all night and we didn't match them till late," George said of the Jazz.

This is perfect. This is exactly where I could have hoped this would be. The Clippers overlooking us, thinking we're getting lucky, only letting it sink in that just maybe we're able to beat them when it's too late.

2-minute report is out. They spotted two IC, the first was the foul that sent Rudy to the line for two FTs, they said the block was clean. The 2nd was at 9.6 seconds, when Joe "tripped" Kawhi; they said Kawhi committed an offensive foul against Joe -- the ball should have been given to the Jazz on the TO, although I liked the Rudy block scenario better.

He also did some blame the refs **** too... I think he's already starting to crack... I didn't watch game 7 but in game 6 he wanted no part of it when things got tight.

So ESPN radio refuses to acknowledge that the NBA exists this morning. All college football, MMA, and hockey. Wonder why that would be?
I would never watch ESPN at home (I have HULU and no cable TV but if I had cable I'd still skip it) but I glance at it when I'm at the gym.

Today I saw them talking about the following (they have the sound off so I usually just read the headings):

-Durant having issues with Jay-Will over some he-said issue
-Peanut brain Kendrick Perkins having a Twitter feud with a rapper
-A debate on who is better - the Nets big-3 or the Warriors big-3

It appears they don't even talk about sports; it's turned into a TMZ for sports.

Locke had some interesting stuff on Kawhi and PG today. They usually sit out a game or two after playing 7-8 straight. Fatigue and wear down could be real with them. Playoff minutes are hard and they have already logged a lot of em.
