What Price Should the Jazz Extend THT?

For sure. I don't think they view it as a success or big failure, but i think given the chance to go back they likely would pass on it.
What chaps my *** the most is that this will be attributed to being something that could have only been appreciated in hindsight.

He is kind of a “tease” as a player so I can see how we or other teams talk themselves into him. My whole deal was it just felt like a gamble where they needed to pay for the second year on that deal with some seconds. Since all we did with our cap space was acquire the free John Collins I guess the opportunity cost isn’t bad with hindsight. THT will help the tank later in the season or maybe we can flip him for a new version of THT with more years on his contract and do this again.

I should go bump the thread when this happened there were a couple of us (myself and HH for sure) stating how bad of a deal it was.

One of us (not saying who) was so sure it was a bad deal that he came up with a theory to explain why we could have possibly done the deal. That theory was later proven 100% correct according to all JazzFanz users.

I mean, its still better than the contract we gave Sexton....
I don't think we gave Sexton a contract did we?
I thought we traded for him and Cleveland had given him the contract but I'm not certain.

Down payment theory?

Well, we needed him included to get the deal done to have salaries match. He was a sign-and-trade.

The Jazz negotiated the contract. I'm not certain on the details to what HAD to be done to make the deal legal, but we put way too many damn years on it.

Had to have at least three years... annual amount needed to hit a certain threshold too... he also would have had us over a barrel if we tried to play hardball. its not a great contract but I think its salvageable in multiple ways.

A 4/80 extension on THT would have been atrocious. THT is looking at minimum or BAE next year unless he plays a lot better. Sexton if he was a free agent likely looking at Malik Monk type money when he was coming out of Charlotte. 2/37M after this year isn't great but its only off by 10-15M total over the two years.

The money had to be enough that his and Markkanen`s contract could get close enough to Mitchell`s contract to make the trade legal. It had to be minimum three years, but not all years had to be guaranteed. We only guaranteed one year when we tried to put one over on the sixers when we made agreed to an offer sheet with Paul Reed.

Sexton`s contract looks fair at the moment and I can`t see any realistic scenario where it puts us in a tough spot.

When I wrote that it was before he went on a heater. As a starter he’s been fantastic. To be in a sign and trade I believe they have to have three guaranteed years so that it’s not just like the Keith van horn deal where they sign a one year deal for salary filler. Reed wasn’t in a sign and trade so no restriction.

I’d shop Collin a bit since his play has ticked up but I wouldn’t sell him for peanuts. I think JC coming off the bench has been better too. Seems they are both performing better which only helps things.

just keep starting him. I probably wouldnt look to trade him this year. If a trade happens that is good, great, but I would just try and boost his value this year as a legitimate starting PG on a team that isnt awful.

He’s not a PG he’s a SG.

Kind of semantics to an extent. If he's a starter on a team that is at least somewhat contending for a play-in spot someone could view him as a good gamble to be their starting PG.

I just think he’s better off as the secondary ball handler. Would work extremely well with someone like LeBron I think.

Well yeah, of course, but no one is dying to have a 6'1 SG and most teams don't have a jumbo primary ball-handler.

Sexton's value is someone (like the Spurs/Pistons/Raptors) looking at their ****** guards and saying they need someone with some talent. "Yeah, Sexton might not be a PG, but he just started for the Jazz and they were better than us"

I definitely think the Pistons are on the verge of making a trade out of desperation.
