Following Potential 2025 Draftees

I think Suggs is a good expectation for VJ. He’ll likely end up a similar player and probably around the same level. He is unlikely to be a star player, but to act like he has zero chance to make improvements and his stuck at his current skill level is kind of ridiculous.

I bet my bottom dollar the Magic take Fleming if he's available at 16.

He fits their fetish (length) and their need (shooting), and being nearly 21, could also fit their current timeline and ready to play now.

His first step beating people off the dribble is his biggest weakness though. Can he improve and create advantages for himself in isolation and off the dribble?

It all just depends on who you believe could improve or become something they aren’t currently with the information we have on hand.
I'm not sure his actual first step is the problem. I think his handle needs improvement and he does need adding some craft. I think opponents played his drive first, second and third and then were worrying about him pulling up so that's another reason his first step doesn't pop as much as you'd expect.

Well, I say first step because he struggles to beat his man off the dribble.

I think some people are a little too harsh on his handle. They act as if he can’t dribble a basketball. He’s not NBA PG/lead initiator level, but it think he gets to the rim at a reasonable rate and his brute force style/athleticism allows him to get rim attempts/FT’s from situations that few others can.

Also, just going to put it out there, but he does have a lot of the underlying statistical indicators that stars have. Draft models aren’t perfect, but I am a big believer that certain indicators can say a lot about a player.

Yeah... his handle is not horrible... it's probably good enough for secondary initiator, but if we want to project him as a star(Edwards type rather than Suggs type), he needs to work on it.

Agreed on the indicators. And his rebound rate is pretty good too. It's one of the best in the draft for a guard. It's double that of Tre for example, despite not being as long. His stocks are through the roof too...

VJ does do a lot on the floor to impact winning for sure. If you’re strictly going for better all-around player he should definitely be probably 3rd overall in the draft.

That’s interesting the more I think about it. I’d much rather take an upside swing on Ace or Tre but VJ is the more well-rounded prospect overall.

Do the Jazz think like this? Who knows. I hope we take an upside swing though.
