What's new

Game Thread: Utah @ BYU, Sat. 9/21 8:15pm MT, ESPN2

Made it to here before my head exploded.

We. Beat. You. Every. Single. Year. And. You. Zoobs. Have. The. Same. Argument. Every. Single. Year.

So you agree with lefty that a team never improves or gets worse as a season goes on.
Ok, its a new philosophy to me but I guess anything is possible.
I'm not arguing that byu is better than utah.... I'm simply sayng that teams get better or worse as a season goes along.

Agree to disagree I guess

So, serious question for the Ute Fans...

Which would you rather have:

a) a season where you did well enough in the Pac 12 and out-of-conference games that you finish ranked, say #16 nationally--but you lost to the Cougars?

or

b) a season where you beat the Cougars, but did mediocre in the Pac 12 and other games, and ended up ranked, say #41?

I'm very interested in your answers.

Edit: In case it's not obvious, those rankings are the current Cougar/Ute compilation rankings from https://masseyratings.com/cf/compare.htm.

I would like the Utes to win every single football game they play in from now until the end of time.

I'm guessing that means you pick choice A, but are embarrassed to admit it because that would mean that Cougar fans should be quite pleased with how their team is performing this year. Did I get that right? ;-)

You know... this only works if the Cougarettes have a chance to beat the Utes.
Which hasn't happened for years, and won't happen for at least a couple more.

So I'll pick option C - beat the Cougarettes (like normal), and also have a great PAC-12 season.

Because if we can beat them all the time now when we're having a hard time in the PAC-12, what makes you think we'd have a more difficult time if we were performing well in the PAC-12?

/end debate

But a more serious answer to your question is this:

I don't CARE about rankings!!!! I care about how well we do in the PAC-12. I want to WIN the PAC-12 South so we can have a chance to go to the Rose Bowl! And if we lose the PAC-12 Championship game, there's a chance we'd go to the Rose Bowl anyway, if the winner of the PAC-12 Championship got into the National Title game.

Rankings be damned. I want to go to the Rose Bowl! The rankings will take care of themselves. A great ranking doesn't get you diddly squat if you can't go to a good bowl game.

Teh. Yewts. R. Teh. Bhest. !. And. Wee. Beat. BYUS. Agin. Ann. Htats. Al. Thet. Maters. !. Har. Haar. Neener. Nener. Me. No. Talkey. Pphhhthtttt. !.

Utah beat BYU when they played and were better on that day. They did this consistently over the last decade plus for the most part. Most were close, but there were a few stompings. Utah gets the bragging rights.

It is possible the team that loses is better later in the year, but that is only with early games which has only happened recently. Historically it's been the last game and there is absolutely no doubt which team is better at the end of the year. It is statistically possible that the team that is not as good wins depending on how close they are, and rarely a team that is far worse can win. Playing the odds though the better team wins.

Imo Colton has just been saying that it is possible for the team that was worse earlier in the season is now better than the other team. I believe that is the case this year with the Utes and Cougars, for the most part because of injury and the Utes sliding, and the Cougars gelling and improving vastly in their offense.

Does it really matter, no, but it is interesting.

If you are sad about your team getting worse and injured I can see how the last thing you have to hold on to is that you beat your rival and so of course in your own minds you will be better than them for the next 36 months or so no matter what. I get it, hang on to your beloved last nut.

Unpossible
Scoreboard

There is not a single fan base in the country that can whip themselves up into a fervor over hypothetical scenarios as well as byu can.

So you'd rather have more overall wins than a loss to the Cougars, then fewer overall wins and a victory over the Cougars. Is that what you are saying? That sounds a lot like my choice A, does it not?
