BYU to the Big 12 discussion???

Can't believe I'm posting in here I feel so dirty, in an effort to get this back on track and I'm sure a lot of people have read this a already, a coworker told me this morning there was an article in the SLTrib about this. I'll just cut and paste the part he chatted me.

BYU was talking to the Big12 about joining, but said they wanted to be on National TV XX Times a year and if they weren't they wanted to be able to have the rights to broadcast the other games on BYU TV. ABC/ESPN and Fox Sports Media Group said NO, so BYU was told they couldn't join, but I'm sure they just told Big 12 that so it would be a WIN/WIN for BYU if they did decide to join

That would be true if both teams were actually in a meaningless conference and didn't have much of a shot at a good bowl game. Now that one has a conference and the other is irrelevant until they get into one.... I would venture a guess that it meant more to the BYU fans than the Utah fans to play each other this year.
You would think so but there is no question the BYU game is the only thing Utah fans are clinging to at this point. Like I said, as Utah has sucked more and more Utah fans keep going back to the BYU game more and more. And I'll venture a guess that Utah will be happy with any bowl game at this point.

There's no question BYU is only going to join a conference on their terms and those terms are unlike any other CF team in America. BYU has been down this road for years. And any conference taking on BYU would have to be very careful in negotiations (again, happening for years even decades). Probably just not worth the trouble for most conferences. I don't blame them. As far as who is telling who "no", I'd say neither. BYU is probably saying "we will join on these terms" and conferences are saying "you will join on these terms". Same ol same ol.

The article also said that Sunday play was a major issue.

Here are the relevant paragraphs from the article:

https://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/cougars/52718156-88/byu-television-conference-league.html.csp
The Tribune has learned that the television partners had concerns with BYU’s no-play-on-Sunday policy and how it might impact television plans as they related to televising non-football sports on Sundays — particularly the Big 12 conference basketball tournament championship game. That game has not been played on Sunday since 2008, but the television partners wanted to retain the Sunday option.

Additionally, BYU — which left the Mountain West Conference for more national television exposure as a football independent — apparently wanted assurances from the Big 12 that it would appear on national television a minimum, unspecified, number of times per season. The Cougars also were said to want permission to show their football games not picked up by Big 12 television partners on their own television network, BYUtv, which is available in more than 60 million homes nationwide.

Making the equal-access promise, as well as the provisions for BYUtv, was problematic for the television partners.

Or BYU feels that the BCS is a load of crap, dishonest, and is ruining the integrity of the game/spirit of competition.
There's no way you or anyone else on this earth believes that would be a reason they wouldn't join.

This is disappointing even as a Utah fan. I wanted both schools to be in a big conference and it looks like BYU sabotaged their own chances.

Why not? I feel that way about the BCS, which is why I could give two dumps about the Big 12, the Suck 12, or whatever other conference is out there. Remember last year when Utah fans felt the same way?

I do and I still feel the same way. BCS is crap and college football needs a better system.

-Ute fan with reason.

As a Ute player once said, "BYU is our bowl game". It seems as this season goes on that game means more and more to Ute fans. Happy to help you through the rough times, Little Brother.

Keep rocking that exciting schedule!

I agree they still need a playoff platform, also I don't think ute fans are bragging about being in the BCS, just about being able to play a quality schedule. Which currently we are sucking in.

As a college football fan I'm rooting for byu to get into the big 12.

Utah would be a Mecca for college sports. Two schools 40 min apart in the pac12 and big 12? Yes please.

I'd like to know what Ute fans are on this board championing the fact that the BCS is instant greatness now that Utah is associated with it. Trout has brought it up several times and I figure that he must be talking about other Ute fans he knows because I don't really see Utah fans on this board claiming that the BCS is a fair system now that Utah is involved.

I still hate the BCS. Remember 2004? When Utah, USC Auburn and Oklahoma all finished the season undefeated, 2 schools who hadn't lost were left out of having any chance to compete for the title. Utah being left out at least made some sense. A school from a lesser conference, playing a lesser schedule, etc. But freakin' Auburn was left out! If a school from what is largely considered to be the best conference in all of college football can run the table and still get left out of a national title game, what does that say about the current system?

Even though Utah is now a Pac 12 school, they could run the table in the future and still get left out of having any title shot. If it happened to an SEC school, it sure as hell can happen to little ole' Utah. I gotta disagree with Trout big time. I don't think Utah fans are "ok" with the BCS now that they are a member. What they are ok with is playing games in a better conference and hoping to see years in which Utah is good enough to make runs at the Rose Bowl.

Any BYU fan that has a problem with Utah fans being happy about that, is either simply spouting sour grapes, or has their head firmly entrenched in their ****** hole. Trout, I don't know what category you fit in, but best wishes regardless.

While I appreciate the response, it's clear that you're not ready to face reality. (much like every Ute fan on this board not named Archie Moses)

I have neither Sour Grapes nor my head up my ***, but do have a realistic take on Utah fans. All you need to do is go look back through your facebook friends updates over the last few months. How many of them are spouting off about their uberness now that they're IN? I've yet to see a SINGLE person upset about being in the BCS, which is kind of what my point was. It's about loyalty. It's about giving a damn. It's about having core beliefs and sticking to them. It's cool though, you guys joined up with public enemy #1 and you're ok with that -- because now you're getting what you want. Way to sell yourselves out.

Yeah, I still feel the same way. I just don't think there's even the most remote possibility a school would turn down an invite strictly on that principle. If BYU did it for those reasons, why wouldn't they voice their reasoning and opinion? Some people might still not buy it, but everyone would appreciate the notion and the sentiment.

And BCS or not, these conferences were superior to anything BYU or Utah (previous to this year) have ever experienced. That's really not up for debate.

Trout, we'll probably just keep going in circles because you seem to be dealing in absolutes on this one.

If BYU accepted an invitation to the Big 12, I would expect their fans to be excited and I don't think that they would be selling out to the almighty BCS. I think it's entirely possible for BYU fan to be excited about playing the likes of Texas and Oklahoma each year, the possibilites of a conference title game and the fact that they would now have a tie-in with the Fiesta Bowl. I also think it's possible to be excited about all of those things and still want a college football playoff.

Again, I haven't seen 1 single Ute fan in here proclaiming that we shouldn't have a playoff system simply because Utah is now "in" the club. If that starts happening, you may have a point. Until then, it seems as if you just have an axe to grind with little to back it up.
