9th pick though? :smh Sunk cost though.
We’re generally positive about some guys that do well on offense, but are terrible on defense. So why indeed not be positive about a player like Cody who does well on one end an not the other. If you just pretend that this is Cody's rookie year then I think you would be pretty happy right now. He's the only guy playing right now that is playing both good man defense and help defense, as he continues to get stronger he will be a good defender, I'm pretty confident. His shot looks improved and workable.
He obviously still has a long ways to go, but I'm more encouraged than discouraged right now.
And he’s getting serviceable on the offensive end, while our other players aren’t even serviceable on the defensive end. He’s actually going to be a long term rotation player in the NBA if he stays on this trajectory, which is probably more than most of us could have hoped for after his rookie season from hades. We’re generally positive about some guys that do well on offense, but are terrible on defense. A #10 pick in THAT draft though? If you pull a rotation player anywhere from that draft, you won. He's had some moments, but so far overall not even close to worth a top 10 pick.
When i coached my kids were not allowed to shoot 3s until they hit 10 consecutive layups 10 consecutive free throw and 10 consecutive from mid range. We won the championship that year. That last sentence is so true. With the kids at the elementary school I'm always telling them to get closer to the hoop and attempt shots that they are more likely to make (and that they have good form on) but they just want to chuck airballs from half court in the hopes that 1 in 30 chucks goes in and they can gloat and brag about it.
So dumb. They all seem to really hate layups.
One other note. I love it that the best shooter in the school last year was a 3rd grade girl. It cracked me up watching the boys get all butthurt that she is a better shooter than them. She can also throw and catch a football better than many of the boys. And she isn't a tomboy either. She is a girly girl but just happens to be really coordinated. Its awesome. I told her parents they should put her in rec basketball and they didn't even know she knew how to play basketball.
To me there are too many moments where I feel sort of awkward about what he just did... and not enough of those moments where I feel impressed by him.I hope he has a year of wild and significant progress.
Watching him play I feel the same way I felt watching Trey Burke play. I find it deeply unenjoyable.
