What's new

Coronavirus

As of April 11 with a footnote that figures are incomplete. US COVID deaths were at 20k at that point.
I saw something about that and the CDC doesn't keep count the same way we're getting our daily update. Their numbers are behind those unofficial counts.

You're right, Democrat's would prefer to have a socialist society. So if Trump/Republican party wanted to not reopen for a say a year, the Dems way of doing the "opposite" would be to propose delaying the reopening of the economy for an even longer, unreasonable amount of time.

A socialist society? Could you describe what a socialist society looks like?

Is it where farmers are given millions of dollars because they’re going bankrupt?

One where taxpayer dollars are given to private (religious) schools?

One where golf courses and resorts are given billions of dollars to help them out during a pandemic?

Is that a socialist society? And you think Democrats are pushing for this?

Please. Keeping people socially isolated during quarantine is not a "socialist society", and countries with political rulers well to the left of the Democrats (for example, Sweden) are making more dangerous choices.

I haven't heard many people complaining about socialism as they've cashed $1,200 checks.

But that’s different. That’s free market capitalism. Those people deserve their $1,200 checks so they can get grass seed and pay for the hair salon.

Socialism is when you give stuff, like health care and food, to people who I don’t think deserve it. That’s socialism.

I really dislike arguments along these lines. None of us have a choice once the checks are issued. We paid for it as taxpayers either way. Would make no sense to protest and not take the payment while still paying for it.

Just saying the memes along these lines on facebook, and the point you make above, it is not meaningful. It's a hollow argument.

It’s a pretty hallow argument to claim that Democrats are interested in creating a socialist society. Especially since nothing specific listed to describe democratic efforts to turn us into a socialist society. I mean, nearly every country is practicing social distancing as a way to mitigate the effects of this pandemic. Steps that were taken even back in 1918 with the Spanish flu outbreak. And especially after 3.5 years of Trump shredding the free market to play favorites while exploding the debt.

The same tired attacks of Democrats and socialism no linger have any any merit. It’s not 2010 anymore.

The states that opened early are going to prove the liberal ****s wrong, again. They were already proved wrong when thousands upon thousands of people had Spring break on Miami beaches and did not cause a spike in deaths. They were proved wrong they predicted that we would have 200k deaths in two weeks but here were are 2 MONTHS later with only 60k deaths.

This whole thing has just become a political stance now. Because Trump wants to reopen the economy, the liberal sheep want to do whatever the exact opposite of what Trump wants to do. If Trump's position was to keep the economy closed for as long as possible, the liberal sheep would be calling for everything to open up immediately.
Oh so you think the liberals were the only ones who thought it would be a good idea to practice social distancing. I see why you are confused now.

Are you attempting to address what I said?

the original poster made a lame bumper sticker attack shriek of socialism. Responding posts showed simple but obvious forms of socialism practiced by Republicans. We can’t exactly have a great debate when the kickoff was based on a lame straw man shriek that’s been refuted a million times over.

As far as the checks go, People don’t have to cash them. They can always send them back. It would make perfect sense if one “despised” socialism to do that. Or do you believe principles are only principles when they’re easy to live by?

It WOULD NOT make sense to send them back in protest after having paid for them. You're making a fat crayon argument. It's a bad look.

I questioned @magic making the assertion that Democrats want a socialist society. They have not yet responded. I'm waiting for their response so that I'm making arguments based on what they actually say and believe.

Making a very very simple minded and very stupid argument based on not taking a stimulus payment is basic facebook level political thought. Be better.

That was in response to One Brow's comment that Dems would not open early even if it was the opposite of what Trump is doing. Which is valid, they would try to do something different to Trump but in a 'liberal' way, i.e. longer measures or more free money, etc.

You're the confused one. Conservative states, such as Utah, took preventative measures, but now because the data shows that extreme measures such as mandating everyone stay in quarantine, is no longer/not needed, they have loosened up the restrictions.

You claimed that Democrats want a socialist society. You didn't just claim it, you made an assertion. You stated it as a plain fact.

Defend that statement.

In my re-reading I understand that saying "defend that statement" might be confusing.

Anyway, what I mean is, you made a statement asserting a fact. That fact you asserted is that "Democrats want a socialist society."

That statement is not an actual fact as far as I understand things. So, I'm giving you the opportunity to establish the facts that you stated. That's what I meant by "defend that statement."

You've got the ball. Shot clock is running.

More free money than Trump is doling out? How much more? Is the difference between liberal and conservative 10% more free money? 5%?

Every state took preventative measures. Why do you say they are no longer needed? What's the basis for this opinion?

Then your question is stupid. There is a wide spectrum of Democrats with different preferences on what kind of society they want. So saying Dems are any one single option would always be incorrect. I just said that they would prefer a Socialist society. You can use replace that with a more liberal society if that helps you sleep better at night. It wasn't even the main point of my argument, so I'm not going to comment on this any further.

Data. If you look at the data objectively, then a lot of states should reopen. Obviously cities with large population densities need to take different actions.
