Coronavirus

China is doing a decent job of trying to contain this. I wish they would accurately report the information though especially the local agencies instead of worrying how it makes them look.

You can condemn China for keeping live animals in markets that lead to this like bats. But if you do that you should also condemn places that eat pigs that are much much much bigger problem for viruses around the world and much more deadly and contagious virus have come from them. Including much worse outbreaks from the USA than this one. We in the USA are much better educated on this stuff yet not doing a better job either.

Maybe not +35 degrees Celsius, but history and personal experience has shown, that regular use of warm sauna (+80 degrees celsius and above) helps to keep all kinds of flu like viruses away.
I guess that all kind of coronary viruses are not as common in Miami or near the coast of Mediterranean sea (Italy, Croatia, southern france, Egypt) compared to New York or Alaska or Northern Europe?

Flu is definitely worse in cold weather places. But flu can hit warm areas depending on the strand.

The Chinese red Cross has been doing some really shady stuff. People are really upset about it here. Despite the fact there is a lot of corruption in China, Chinese people get really outraged about that stuff.

Vegetables are in shortage in wuhan and they were donated to the red Cross there. The red Cross then sold them to the people on wuhan. The one that got people really mad is that they are running out of masks even for hospital employees and the red Cross there was shown to be giving boxes of them to high up local government employees out the back door.

Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the what the Tweet from the school means. I don't understand how a school like UC Berkeley (or department or whoever it was) wouldn't actually know that tweeting that **** would cause some backlash. You're at UC Berkeley. What the hell are you thinking?

So the city I'm in has decided to shut everything down. Public gatherings are banned. All restaurants are shut down you can only order to go. All the bars, pool halls, mahjong places or anything like it are shut down. They have trucks driving around saying a bunch of stuff like no gatherings, wash your hands, don't spread false rumors, and other stuff.

My hotel has mahjong tables in it. Last night the police raided our hotel with like 20 cops and went room by room checking to see if anyone had gatherings to play mahjong. We were playing and got told to stop and a warning. The cops were quite shocked to see a group of foreigners playing though! They started taking pictures, it was funny.

Are the opium dens still open?

Some videos were circulating on Facebook and other platforms showing people collapsing on the streets, as well as other bodies of people who suddenly collapsed in public places. These are being censored and removed by Facebook as spreading conspiracies, although the video footage itself looks authentic.

Multiple reports are saying that hospitals have been turning away patients who complain of symptoms, and are often refusing to administer tests that would determine whether the person in question has the novel coronavirus. People are being told to stay in their homes and not come to hospitals. Only people who are formally tested at hospitals and found to have the virus are counted in the official numbers.

The rate at which the infection is spreading (the R0 or 'R-naught') is now thought to be just under 4, meaning that each infected person is expected to infect ~4 others. If the disease spreads exponentially, the R0 is essentially the exponent.

As of last couple of days, Shanghai and Beijing are now reportedly under quarantine.

I wouldn't joke about this. The real death toll could ultimately end up in the hundreds of thousands.

Having talked with friends in wuhan some with friends and family with the virus the hospitals are turning people down that aren't that sick. They don't have room to treat everyone and the vast majority of people will heal on their own. The death rate is fairly low. Only one person under 60 has died. My friends mom and grandmother are in wuhan and got the virus both have recovered at home with no issue. I've been watching lots of live feeds. The streets are a ghost town. Lots of the videos showing "dead or collapsed" people in the streets are just normal people sleeping places which is quite common in China. Beijing and Shanghai are not on lock down. They are extending the holiday and delaying the start of school. They are asking businesses not to open. Wuhan is on full lock down though.

Facebook is trying hard to shut down all the fake stories. China is trying hard as well but they are everywhere. People are pretty willing to believe the worse because they have a lot of fear about this.

I doubt the death toll will be that high, won't even come close to Ebola

It's not very deadly. There's no way it hits that level. There's flu virus's around we should be more worried about. Like the H1N5 that's shown up in pigs in a couple countries and birds in China. It has a 50% death rate and we don't have a vaccine because certain countries wouldn't share their samples of it. Flu stuff is pretty interesting. Reading the history of flu in the world is very interesting.

My buddies in Shanghai are still cycling outdoors. Virus don't stop them, high aqi does and rain. Still beats staying at home all day.

You think this is fake?

Yes, the fake guy crying with bad acting. A bunch of people without masks. Then letting him just freely walk around recording are among a few things that look suspicious to me in that video. Also the fact I know multiple people giving me the first hand knowledge of the situation is more believable to me.

There numbers are much higher from wuhan. Their mayor has been very shady. But I think think the other places in China have been reporting pretty accurately as well as other countries. There has been no deaths outside of China. It seems this is really only killing old people. This won't be nearly as bad as the common flu was in the USA in 2018.
