if a news outlet is willing to publish blatant propaganda then maybe the entire outlet is propaganda
When I consider propaganda within American media, I think of OAN, the nighttime lineup of Fox News talking heads, outlets like that. And there are very far left media outlets that exaggerate, and whose pages I spend no time on. The Washington Post leans left, but I personally would not consider it an organ of propaganda.
I wish media wouldn't be so cavalier with people's trust. Lies, even if they were well meaning, can leave an outsized impact.
I agree, I just see the greater abuse of citizen’s trust coming from the entire Orwellian style Big Lie promoted by Trump, his media allies like the OAN’s of the far right, and supported by much of the MAGA aligned Republican Party. This Big Lie certainly has had an impact. Although there was no theft of a victory by Trump, Trump’s insistence that our elections are riddled with massive fraud, and fraud that in 2020 led to the Democrats stealing the election, a lie he also promoted months before the 2016 election, a lie he promoted months before the 2020 election, a lie he promoted to the 1/6 insurrectionists, even as he told them America “loved” them, has indeed had an outsized impact.
Seems there is a good chance, that, in promoting this lie, with help from his propaganda organs, the man, and now his party, have possibly irrevocably destroyed any chance of millions of Americans trusting our presidential elections again. A lack of trust now besetting citizens on both sides of our great divide. I’m sure there were plenty of people distrusting of elections before Trump came along, but the damage he has done, and which the GOP is still not distancing itself from, strikes me as considerable. So, yeah, I think lies that permeate the political landscape, and which ensnare weak minded people, lacking critical thinking skills, and simply hearing what they want to hear(my guy Trump won, and Biden is illegitimate), yeah, good chance of a very outsized impact.
Trump tried to prevent a peaceful transfer of power in 2020. Given the outsized impact of his Big Lie, and its permeating of our body politic, peaceful transfer may be a problem moving forward. A huge potential outsized impact. But, we’ll see….
On the other hand, not sure who an mRNA exaggeration “lie” would be intended to influence. If the unvaccinated, no effect whatsoever, let alone an “outsized” one. Because there is nothing, whatsoever, not even Trump’s vaccine recommendation, which would change the mind of anti-vaxxers. So the exaggeration you selected would have no outsized impact on the pandemic in the United States.
But, in terms of weighing the effect of a Post writer, exaggerating the rating of mRNA vaccines in the history of vaccines, compared to the rally of anti-vazzers holding a rally in Washington today, I think “exaggerating” to hype the effectiveness of our current mRNA vaccines is likely not going to have an outsized impact that could be described as unfortunate. At all. The anti-vaxxer lies, on the other hand, yeah people die, so yeah, that’s a bit more outsized in its effects, I believe. And clearly “unfortunate”, in a way hyping the mRNA vaccines is clearly not, IMO.
