Cougars 2011-12 Football Discussion

Three words

Michael Calvin Leach

Of course, zoobie ultra-conservatives probably are afraid of Leach's temper and potential to have some serious clashes with the honor code. And for all we know, Leach is waiting for a big time job to open up (isn't he basically just living off his Tech contract right now?).

But if Mike Leach is available and interested, he'd be my #1 choice before Andy Reid or anyone else...

Is Leach LDS? That's interesting if he is, I've never heard that. IMO that would be a slam-dunk for BYU. I realize he may not as rooted in the honor code and the school's overall mission as much as Bronco is, but lets be honest: From the stories that are out there, Lavell wasn't exactly the stickler that Bronco is and he got a freakin' stadium named after him.

IMO Leach would be a better recruiter and obviously BYU would play a pretty exciting brand of ball. I hope it doesn't happen!

I'm almost sure he's a baptized member....

But I'm also pretty sure he isn't active...

Born to Frank and Sandra Leach[4] in Susanville, California, Mike Leach claims Cody, Wyoming, as his hometown.[5] He graduated from Cody High School before studying at Brigham Young University, where he closely followed the exploits of the Brigham Young Cougars. The Cougars, guided by head coach LaVell Edwards and offensive coordinator Norm Chow, played a pass-oriented offense. Leach graduated in 1983 with a bachelor's degree in American Studies.[6]

In 1986, Leach earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Pepperdine University School of Law. Leach is also one of the most prominent graduates of the United States Sports Academy, from which he earned a Master's of Sports Science/Coaching in 1988. Leach is married with four children. He was raised a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Just this past week 1280 the Zone interviewed Leach. He's still very much a fan of BYU and is upset with the way Doman has crapped this offense. Leach was brutally honest and said that there was "no excuse" for this offense with soooooooooo many returning starters and talent to struggle so much.

I've always loved Leach. And more coaches should be able to stuff pompous lazy *** sons into garages. Craig James is a BCS a-hole. His son was supposedly a complete jerkoff to everyone. Of course, no one wanted to mess with him, since his dad could easily blast you from his ESPN throne. Annndd... that's what happened.

Leach is still one of the best coaches in college, period. Dude might be a little rough around the edges, but most of the good ones are. Urban, Sabin, Leach, Kelley, etc aren't exactly guys I'd "love" to invite to a BBQ. Guys like the mad Hatter and Pete Carrol are exceptions.

I doubt BYU would go with an inactive member to man their HC position. But at the same time, I'm not convinced that a strong member needs to be the HC either!

I think it largely depends on how desperate the AD and President become. If Bronco and Doman really do suck, I wouldn't be surprised to see BYU hire someone a little less preachy and a little more football ***-kicking savvy.

There's a lot of money to be made in college Football. I'm sure BYU doesn't want to be left in the dust...

Of course, I think today's social media makes it much harder for things to be swept under the rug... But...

Desperation and money can lead people into taking some pretty interesting choices. We'll see how this whole "independence" thing works out. Like I said, there's a ton of money to be made... A lot of exposure to be made... BYU left the MWC to make $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ in football and give themselves much more exposure.

The product that Bronco and Doman have produced thus far, hasn't been what was expected. Make no mistake, these two clowns are under a tremendous amount of pressure. They cannot have another season like this one. I think the leash is already being pulled... This game against Utah St. is a big one... If utah St. blows BYU out in Provo, you'll hear rumblings... I'd guess Webber and Lance Reynolds... Doman too... They still have a game against TCU (which should be another loss) and a tough matchup in Hawaii....

I personally wouldn't be surprised to see a coach or two gone at the end of the year if things don't improve drastically... Lance could "retire" because he's been there for so long (and be used as a martyr to save face... Webber could be in trouble too)....

I don't have any inside info on this issue. But I think everyone, including Utah fans, would expect a few coaches to be fired if BYU finishes this season losing to Utah St, TCU, and Hawaii while the offense continues to struggle.

I don't know whether or not Leach is active, but there's a zero chance that BYU hires an inactive member to be the HC. There's a far greater chance that BYU would hire a non-LDS coach (and that chance is pretty darn small as long as there are potential LDS people to hire out there). Heck, an inactive member can't even be hired as a regular faculty member, and the HC position is certainly a lot more visible than a regular faculty hire. To be hired by BYU into a faculty position these days, if you are LDS you must have a temple recommend, or at least be "temple recommend worthy" if there's some quirk of fate that prevents you from actually having a current recommend.

Leach would be a great hire for BYU, but I've also heard rumors that he's Arizona's top choice if Mike Stoops looks elsewhere next summer.

Personally, I don't care whether the HC is an active member or not. I don't even care if he's a member. IMO, the Head Coach of the football program should be the Head Coach of the football program, not an extension of the kids' Bishop. I do think they should enforce the Honor Code and be a good representation of the Church and University, but they don't need to be a mission president type though either. I think LaVell did an excellent job of that.

Little Sister @ BYU on Friday.

Brad Rock wrote a column today on what a win this weekend would do to this rivalry. If you can even call it that.... I think after you've beaten a team down something like 26 out of the last 30 times, it's not really considered a rivalry. Jan Jorgansen hit the nail on the head today when he said that BYU doesn't consider this Utah St. game a very big emotional rivalry game. Whereas the Aggies do. To BYU, this game is like what a Jazz game means to the Lakers. To Aggies, it's like what a game against the lakers means to the Jazz.

BYU has bigger fish to fry. And that fish, despite having a horrible QB with a jacked up shoulder, came into their place and kicked their ***...

I think the Aggies will always feel like they got the shaft when BYU didn't want them to join the WAC....

Had Utah St. been able to piggyback on BYU and Utah and join their conferences, perhaps things would be different today? ... we'll never know!

USU is going to make BYU look bad. I don't know if USU wins, but the Cougars aren't going to win this easily.
