I would have tried to intervene no doubt. I am quite good at breaking up fights. I have done it so many times. I have a knack for it for some reason.

Someday if I meet certain JazzFanz irl I want you there to calm things down.

My dad owned a bar for years... one of his best buds was like 6’6” cowboy handle bar mustache ... he broke up every fight with the same line... “you guys can fight but I get the winner” people would immediately chill. Big Joe Bailey was his name... super calm and I wondered how many dudes he’d actually knocked out.

I get the panic here I myself got out ahead of things by a week or so... but if we are really planning on shutting down businesses for 2-3 months the damage to the economy will be catastrophic and I’m not sure it changes much except the rate at which this thing accelerates.

I have zero answers... none but at some point the better safe than sorry saying is kinda untrue... no? 2 weeks is reasonable... 2 months seems absurd. I’m not saying like start basketball up again but maybe like open restaurants and schools and encourage the high risk individuals to stay home.

No doubt. It makes me think of my cancer treatment. I nearly died twice, both times basically from the chemo, not from the cancer itself.

I work with a guy who has a bunch of family Mexico. His family is telling him the public service announcements on the radio are telling people Corona Virus starts in the back of your throat but can be killed by alcohol. They are encouraging people to drink alcohol every half-hour.

I think the science is suspect, but think the USA might benefit from such an announcement.

Saying it's just like the common cold still holds true, as a matter of fact, the cold/flu virus is proven to kill more people on average than this thing. We aren't even in "drop in the pan" status with the death rate with this virus, so sorry if I don't go full panic mode (which is what is helping cause hysteria).

So I stand by that and still urge everyone to use common sense and be smart about cleanliness.

Sounds like fake news, unless it’s parody.

On the flip side, Mexico only has about 50 cases and no reported deaths yet. When you look at the world distribution of cases, can make a decent argument on climate and spread.

So here is the deal. Old people and sick people are supposed to die. It's what nature intended. Forcing the entire country to shut down seems asinine. In a perfect world it would be anyone over 60 is quarantined. Smokers are quarantined. Those with chronic lung diseases are quarantined. The rest of the populace goes on about their life as usual. Herd immunity is built up, old and unhealthy people die at a faster rate than normal but at a slower rate than no quarantine.

Shutting down everything will be a disaster for a long long time. Don't take my word for it though. I just have a PHD in Infectious Diseases.

This is why I voted “5” (but referenced the need for government). My hair isn’t on fire over this, and I have a long-angle lens on history that incorporates this kind of thing as a natural (and, in some sense, unavoidable) event, but there hasn’t been any way for me to project this kind of “middle-ground caution” within my professional or personal communities. It feels like everything went from “need for containment?? haha”, to “holy **** let’s shut everything down” in about 48 hours. And of course this is basically what happened across the nation.

We obviously had, and continue to have, a big Culture Problem in terms of responding to this kind of crisis. And there are ample reasons to think this problem would have reared its head in a number of different kinds of crises. That’s currently the deepest pit of worry that I have, since the politics of responding to disaster figure to be more and more prevalent as the climate crisis thickens. And, we’re really just at square one when it comes to dealing with one another through this, and having a clear vision of what our government should be doing.

What you say is true. Old people and sick people die. And they will die with Covid-19.

It is also true that people poop, and buy toilet paper. As we witnessed last week the system of people buying tp can easily be overwhelmed in a run, leaving others at risk of being out of tp. That is what they are trying to prevent with covid. A run on hospitals by the old, the sick, and the others who get a severe case could collapse the medical system for all of us.

This is my feeling too. I think we all have two responsibilities:

1- Social distancing to slow the spread, primarily to keep from overburdening hospitals.
2- Don't panic, and don't engage in creating panic (which too many people are doing in this thread).

This is a terrible situation, and there will be a significant loss of life, mostly concentrated on elderly and people with pre-existing conditions. However, we can and will get through this.
