If you truly feel like the all the picks + Moody package was hot garbage....I don't know what to tell you lol.
For a player of Lauri's caliber? Yes, complete garbage. At the very least there needs to be a player with some sort of potential to be an all-star when one is trading a guy who already is an all-star.

I have no clue when draft picks became so overrated in the NBA.

Yeah, none of those picks would be good with Lauri there for the foreseeable future, especially if you arent poaching Kuminga or Podz.

Picks are valuable, but the Jazz already have a ton of picks that are projected to be mid tier first rounders. Having 3 more isnt that great. Having Lauri is better.

What exactly do we gain by agreeing in secret or keeping it open?
You gather intel from suitors. You also have the ability like with Okoro to say $16m first year contract value and put an offer out there. If it is matched you can give Lauri the full 24M this year. If you win the bid then you can give him whatever is left and make up the rest on the backend. Its all optionality. Its the same reason I assume they are not signing the rest of the deals we have agreed to until after Lauri happens.

You can't close it until 8/6 anyway... so why show any part of your hand?

We got ripped off trading Gobert then. I don’t care to dig up these discussions again, we’ve talked over it a million times. If you expect a Luka like trade package, so be it.

What I’m wondering is how we’re feeling about standing where we are because a couple months ago the idea of doing what we’re doing is as blasphemy. Do we hate the idea of moving forward with Lauri, or do we need an unfathomable trade package to move us from that position? Now that it looks like we’re moving forward with Lauri, do we still hate this idea?

The super swaps are fairly important. In my limited contact with folks in the know it seems the league may not be ready for super swaps. If they are regular swaps with like our own pick... bleh. Garbage is a strong word to throw out. I would be curious to know the real details of the trade proposal but we will never get as detailed info as we would need/want.

I will say... most hardcore tankers are like "just do it for whatever you can get" types. Not many threading the needle of being a staunch tanker who also thinks we need 150% of value for Lauri.

Yeah this sounds good in theory but we are seriously listening.

Hey Lauri, I know we have this extension in place but we’re going to put you through a media circus for a month plus just to gather intel from potential suitors lol. Sounds super unrealistic.

How so?

I think the "not this week" was quoted in a weird way when he just meant it's not getting signed Tuesday.
Probably a case like the Boston Globe had this week (though to far more serious consequences for the Globe) of the headline not actually matching what the article says, since the headline writer is not the article's author.

When Ainge built a perennial contender by getting unprotected picks from a desperate franchise.

I don't doubt that we have listened and continue to listen. I think they have ironed out the relevant details with Lauri and told him he could still be moved but very unlikely that a team gives up everything necessary. I don't think we are canvassing the league the next two days looking for a little extra to close a deal though. I think they are operating from the assumption that Lauri re-signs and potentially working on some other things.

That would not be the best practice. Hey Lauri you could get moved but also here’s this extension just in case.

lol that was only one of the reasons you could do it and not something you would share with Lauri anyway. Like in our conversations with SA did we uncover that they are interested but would prefer if Lauri was already extended and would offer more if that was the case. They are in no hurry so revisiting in a year it would be good to know what they would put up.

The key thing would be why show any cards before you have to... if there were any other items you are working on? So you negotiate what the deal would be.... and let him know a trade is still possible because lots of teams are calling but that their preference is to keep him. Then you send Keyonte with a group of trainers to workout with him for a week and send pr staff to document said workouts.
