It is absurd because it is you that is missing the point. Your example proves it.

This has gone far past racist language and provoking fights. It has gone into don't say or do anything that might offend anyone at any point. it has gotten to the point of silencing opposing opinions. That is something I do not embrace.

So what, we undo it all? That's what i'm telling you. These conversations are simply unsophisticated. Saying DOWN WITH PC CULTURE! Is a great buzzword but it's simply an intellectually ignorant statement to make. There's a SPECTRUM of how harmful certain words and sentiments can be, and therefore they have their proportional appropriateness. Something can go to far, and I'm willing to agree with it-- but that's why you should say "we need to consider how far PC culture is taking us-- it's important to a certain extent, but we also don't want to censor free speech".

PC culture is what caused us to stop using the n-word in the public sphere. When people tell you not to use the word midget, what aspect of free speech is it taking away from you? The freedom to hurt? Does that really matter THAT much to you? When someone tells you to avoid misogynistic language, what freedoms are you losing, exactly?

Freedom of speech has never been an all-or-none type of ordeal. Same with freedom of expression, and freedom to bear arms. Every singe law is contextual.

Murder? Well, it's allowed in self-defense, or in war. Freedom of expression? Well, allowed but as long as you're not infringing on the rights of others. And when your words are hurting others, dehumanizing others, and contributing to the stigma of others, that's why it's important we use different vocabulary.

So the PC culture has gone way to far IMO. My freedom of expression and speech is not limited because your feelings got hurt. Nor is yours limited because my feelings got hurt. Even if we probably shouldn't have hurt each others feelings. I don't agree with a lot of what people say. It's rude, bigoted, racist...but I will defend their right to say it.

Fore example: Use your Asian example. If I heard someone say that I'd speak up on how I feel about that. But that person has the right to say it.

I hesitate to tell anyone that they should not be so easily offended. I have not walked in their shoes and have no idea what their life experience is like. I have yet to meet anyone who never gets hurt feelings when others belittle or attempt to diminish their life experiences. And just because one person in a "group" is not offended by certain names or phrases does not mean that all persons in the group should feel the same way.

There are certainly plenty of ways to discuss important issues without hurting other people in the process. Of course we all make mistakes and thoughtlessly hurt and offend others without meaning to do so, but the idea is to be kind, learn from mistakes, and genuinely try to understand someone else's point of view and learn from their experiences. So no, I don't think that "PC culture" is the problem. I think general unkindness and selfishness is the problem.

Free from consequence? No they should not be. I agree there. You have the right to say stupid horrible things. But there are consequences to those things.

I just see a growing push to silence dissent and opposition, both sides are very guilty of this for their own poster children, and I detest it.

So I am for encouraging kinder, friendlier speech and expression. But not at the point of silencing those that say things we may not like.

Think of how much different it has felt to be victimized by terrorism, or to hear our president apologize for who we are, or to watch a regime like Iran capture and humiliate our troops (and then hear John Kerry thank Iran for their handling of the situation). All of that stuff feels like ****.

Watch a Trump rally and I think you'll see that he's making people feel like this country is a winner. That's his secret. It is the same secret Hitler used to rise to power. I'm not saying Trump is Hitler, but both were very skilled at building a following through the use of nationalism.

That's why it irks me. My parents are from Kosovo. We grew up through the Balkan wars, and saw nationalism destroy lives across languages, cultures, and religions. I know the damage it causes. It's scary to see the right elect their own Milosevic.

For me it just comes down to what 'may not like' becomes. If its the word retard, i'm fine with it. If it's Marxism or laissez-faire Economics, then i don't want it silenced.
