Dal, I'm not convinced criminalizing possession/use of drugs of abuse is effective in curbing use/abuse/addiction. I think it probably does more harm than good. So yes, absent better evidence that the best way to deal with drug abuse is by throwing people in prison, I think all drugs should be decriminalized (at the very least).
You do raise a good point-- after all, look how 'successful' the prohibition era was. However, with modern society being so steeped in drug-abuse legislation, I feel like we might want to take the approach of 'getting our feet wet' before we jump into the swimming pool, if that makes any sense. If weed usage plummets after legalization, then maybe this is something we can consider for other drugs as well. I'd suggest we take it one step at a time.
I feel like people really don't understand how pointless the laws against weed are, in terms of inhibiting access. Within 15 minutes, I could think of 3 different people to call and ask for weed if I wanted it by tonight (if I ever smoked, that is).
