What that Detroit team showed was you can win with FIVE guys playing D together and only 4 guys with jump shots. Actually, going back to Rodman/Salley, at times it was only 3 real scorers, although both Rodman and Salley played smart and knew when to roll to the basket for a dunk or layup. But they ate and drank DEFENSE on those ol' Piston teams! The Jazz have yet to develop a defensive "identity" except for fouling anyone in the paint; not exactly a formula for success.
The problem is when a big is greatly overmatched in the paint by his opposite number, as Millsap is vs. so many others. That's a weakness that is very difficult to hide against all these teams with "twin tower" combos that have been created in recent years. Millsap's best shot at success while helping his team is off the bench at BOTH SF and PF; hopefully he'll be willing to do something like that for the Jazz down the road...
I am dubious we'll see AK return, as I don't think we'll wanna pay what he wants. He would help us defensively this year, but then he'd be taking minutes from other younger guys who need court-time to develop. This is something the Jazz brass have to be weighing in on...
As with Millsap, I would never say Hayward "couldn't" do something on the court. BOTH are great competitors willing to do whatever it takes to help the team, including developing new skills we've not seen. I also think the same re: Big Al. I was saying Hayward has already shown he can play SG effectively at both ends for us; he's got some work to do in ye ol' gym to become as effective as a SF.
