Holy Sloppy, Managed Poorly, No Homework Done, Questions From the Trash - Where's a Building? Thread

I was unemployed for a year and a half. I worked for the census at about 1/3 of my previous salary just cuz it was more than unemployment, and it extended my unemployment some. Then I finally took a job here in reno at about 2/3 of my previous salary. It really sucks. I agree with you 100%. General Manager jobs, in the old days (like 4 years ago) would draw maybe 20 resumes max. I had a recruiter tell me he was sifting through 200 GM resumes for one job I applied for. At that point it is simply a lottery. Do they pick your out of the other 50 or so that look just like yours or not?

I feel for ya man. Keep at it. That is all you can do.

How is that multiple even possible? If the unemployment rate is only ~ 9%, why all the extra applications for each job? Are you trying to tell me the government might be fudging that number? Like, if they did something crazy like calculate the number how they used to, it would be much higher? Kind of like they do with inflation? You're a conspiracy theorist, dude.

Do you think that people who are currently working don't send in applications for other jobs?

I don't think fudging isn't happening, as you're saying.

I think that a lot of unemployed, are sending in their applications.
Those underemployed, are as well.
Those employed but interested in other jobs, are sending in their applications.

Hence, why there are so many applications being sent in today.

I am now employed. I am also still looking for a job at my previous level, hence I am still applying to those jobs. The unemployment rate is only a portion of the workers affected. That only counts those that are unemployed and on the states lists as unemployed. It does not cound people that are unemployed and no longer getting unemployment, or who gave up and are no longer looking, or who took jobs to get by that were not fitting their experience or education. The last are called "under-employed", and I fall in that category. Also, it does not include people who see the writing on the wall and are trying to get out before their companies kick them out.

Right. U-6(16%), U-3(9%), and then you have one more stat that is non-governmental and is the computed mean by independent economists using the old government models that puts it at about 150% higher than U-3 at anywhere from 22%-26.5%. There is no reason that model ever needed to be banished except for political reasons. It's the most relevant number.

Archie, if you don't mind what type of jobs/companies are you applying at?

Have you applied at Fidelity? I got a job offer there but I decided to pursue a second degree and couldn't swing both. They start you at 37,000 and you can move up fairly quick. I have a lot of friends there. I still may go back after I finish this degree because they will pay 90% of an MBA. Anyway just a thought.

What position do you start at? Financial analyst? I hear the Goldman Sachs offices in SLC aren't all that hard to get offers from either , at least in comparison to NYC Goldman. And they should start you at quite a bit higher than Fidelity. Actually, I don't know about now, but at least that was the case when they went through their first round of hiring last year sometime.

Congratulations Archie. Is this your first kid? If so, congratulations, and good luck.

LogGrad has an air of sophistication, breeding, intelligence, and humor that is pretty much unmatched.

Oh yeah, and humility. Can't forget humility. Of all of my awesomeness that may very well be my very best quality.
