so far i think he looks more like last season than he did in summer league. But really we're not gonna know much more by the end of the season, we won't really know much more until well into next season if he stays healthy

Yeah, I kind of think he is not in a great situation. He basically is trying to be an upgrade over O'Neale. He isn't playing a real back-up pg role. He doesn't get to facilitate as a traditional pg but is being asked to spot up, with some few opportunities to drive.

It's kind of a tough spot for everyone - including Q as to how best to utilise him.

What would help is if Dante could get a few more wide open looks and knock them down. I just worry that isn't where his real strengths lie.

On defense he looks strong and quick - but still gets fouled up pretty bad.

Yeah I have that sick feeling in my gut.
Tbh, as much as I love Dante, he very well might not make it in the NBA longterm (I'm sure he gets one more contract though). But man I hope he gets a real go of it. I mean 'busts' like Mudiay, Jahlil Okafor, Hezonja (ok that might be harsh/wrong) have had so many chances to play their positions and be allowed to fail. Circumstances and injuries have robbed Exum so far of that.

The Jazz need a spark plug off the bench, and I don't think Exum is that guy. He is a chemistry guy, a dasher but not a gunner, a facilitator (in theory) who is used precious little in that role, defensively minded (and gifted) but not a steal magnet (lol - he had 2 today), not great at getting his own shot - unless it's at the rim (which he needs to get better at).

If the Jazz don't see him as a pg, is he really in their plans to be an off guard or a small forward?

What I saw last night was the beginning of the end for Dante Exum with the Jazz.......Mitchell came down as the PG and bombed shot after shot while Dante was in the corner observing. Also what stood out was the slow pace Mitchell brought the ball up ,it reminded me of Gordon Hayward walking the ball up last year.
Jazz are going to struggle to score in the playoffs. They've made their offense reliant on DM's (43%/33%),Crowder's(40%/33%)gaining minutes over Favors (55%),Rubio's (40%/32%),O'Neale's (39%/34%).Without Gobert's and Ingle's shooting ,the Jazz are a poor shooting squad.
Now you put Exum in as basically a 3rd PG in the rotation and have him run to the corner AGAIN and negating any of his strengths.I had hoped that Dante and DM would speed up the pace and transition of the Jazz ,but it's clear Dante has to defer to DM as he brings up the ball up the court ala Gordon Hayward.Same pace ,same speed,same lack of players able to create more scoring.
It's obvious Exum will be good but seriously doubt it will be with the Jazz who restrict his offensive potential and try to just pigeonhole him into a defensive player only.
I can easily see other teams seeing an opportunity to get Exum from the Jazz with just offering the freedom to play and create offense for their teams as the sweetener to get Exum's attention.

I'm hoping that the go to the corner routine is just part of getting him re-acclimated. It is bad timing to try and re-acclimate a player and give them time to shake off the rust when fighting for a spot in the playoffs. The biggest problem I had last night was the lineups the majority of the time Dante was in. Royce needs to be on the bench, and he can't play with a Rusty Dante, ever. Dante needs to be playing with people that can score.

Exum is about to get big minutes from O'Neale, Burks and Neto. And hopefully a few from Ricky and Donovan. He needs to or else Donovan and Ricky are going to burn out.

That would be ideal but I see Royce O'Neale and Jae Crowder moving in the offense more than Exum and it has nothing to do with whether or not Exum remembers the offense. Exum should be handling the ball like DM and Rubio simply because his potential on offense is greater than both Crowder and O'Neale and with the heavy minutes and struggling shooting of both DM and Rubio they need Exum to exert some offense .

I might be in the minority but I was ok with Exum's role last night. I thought he handled the ball and played PG for the most part. There was that one stretch in the second half where he played in the corner but I believe he was playing the 3 at that point with Rubio and Mitchell in the game. The tricky thing right now is that he's been a little bit shaky with his ball-handling and teams are heavily pressuring him when he brings it up the floor. This might be where the injury hurt him the most. He needs to be able to be really stable to get Quin's trust in those situations.

His defense has been solid, he's still driving aggressively when he has a chance. He needs to see a few jump shots go down. If I'm Quin I experiment with giving him a few more of Royce's minutes, and letting him handle it off of the curl/handoff action when he's playing as a wing. The advantage style should really work well for him. He doesn't always have to initiate every play. We want this thing to eventually be a positionless scheme anyway.
