Jazz are emerging as serious threats to sign Bojan Bogdanovic

Ok, drove back from San Diego and stopped in St. George last night and just got back this morning. Went to sleep last night before TJ’s Bojan tweet and woke up to like a 10 page thread. Here are my thoughts, for anyone that cares:

I remember (memory a little fuzzy though) him in Brooklyn and he looked really good. Was always surprised when I looked at his stats because the way he played, I imagined he’d be lighting up the stat sheet. Then he got traded to Washington and IIRC they played Boston and we were rooting for Boston to lose, and he was super good. I even remember my wife commenting on it. Anyway.

My biggest concern with putting a wing guy at the 4 is that we lose rebounding. One reason I hadn’t been super high on Harris (prior to the past year or so) is because his lack of rebounding, but he’s put up better numbers the past year and a half (~8 per 36). But while we do lose Favors’ rebounding by getting Bojan, you need a more fair comparison. Favors is playing the 4 for like, 10 mins per game? The rest of the time he’s at C. That means that for the vast majority of the game we have Crowder and Niang at the 4 who barely rebound more than Bojan. Still, we lost a lot of games down the stretch because we couldn’t secure easy defensive rebounds. We’ll maintain status quo on that.

But we had been talking about getting 80% of Harris’ production for less price. I legitimately believe Bojan gives you 90-95% of Harris. While he’s playing out of position at the 4, or whatever we do, I think the rebounding problem is a better problem to have than the offensive problem with Favors.

Moreover, I’m glad to see the FO, as well as JFC, willing to pivot from one of their two golden calves and not think “OMG Favors what about the defense!” If things go south with Bojan, I think you may see some Niko stuff resurface as I am somewhat suspect of the info and the timing and think it’s very well a bluff. If that falls through and we don’t get enough offense at the four spot, I think the FO has overcome their mental hurdle to moving on from Favors and I will go back to my pre-Conley belief that they could visit Exum + Favors for Love, but for different reasons than I was elaborating pre-Conley.

1. How will this team not get out-rebounded every game? All starters minus Gobert are below average rebounders. Boj is terrible at it.
2. Who will play 16 minutes at C?
3. That's a lot of shooting but very little athleticism, strength and pace. Won't they really struggle against certain teams?

1. We just won't miss any shots so we don't need offensive rebounds. Rudy will get all teh defensive rebounds
2. Our roster won't be completed yet. We can add an ed Davis Tyson Chandler type to play back up center.
3. If you have enough shooting then athleticism becomes less important. See the golden State warriors pre Durant. They weren't all that athletic but they could shoot so it didn't matter.

Good post
Basically it's almost impossible to have no weaknesses as a team.
Rebounding will probably be our weakness. I prefer that to not being able to make a single shot for 8 minute stretches of games.

Great analysis. Agree that comparing Bojan to Favors is a red herring as Favors' role on our team is really to be an overqualified backup center. He's a very good player who will be very good on another team where the fit makes more sense.

Thaddeous Young would bolster the defense, add athleticism and can hit the three. Better choice than Bojan IMHO.

I have a feeling, and you can quote me on this, that O'Neale will start in place of Ingles by the end of the year. Ingles would be able to run the 2nd unit with Exum. We have plenty of playmakers with Conley, Mitchell and Bojan so having a work horse like O'Neale fits the starting lineup better.

Maybe, but I have a hard time thinking that seeing Royce with the ball in his hands for very long will ever become that comfortable. Defense, catch and shoot, fast break -- great. Dribble into traffic? Turnover.

there is a way we can get both the rebounding as well as shooting. last year there were a total of 7 players who can shoot over 35% on 3's with over 1 3PT made per game, while maintaining a rebounding rate of over 15%.

4 of them are FA this summer. They are: Nikola Vucevic, Dwayne Dedmon, JaMychal Green and Bobby Portis.

Correct. Derrick averaged 11.4 rebounds per 36 last year (and 9ish the previous 4 years), but how many of those rebounds were as a center and against backups? It’s not to discount it, just that he’s playing at the 4 for less then 10 minutes per game. If you have JaMychal green or someone else at the 4 for 10 or minutes per game, it makes that a wash, so the real comparison is Bojan’s 4.7 per 36 to Crowder’s 6.3 per 36 (was 4.9 for us last year) and Niang’s 6.1. Also, it’s unclear what Bojan’s rebounding would be at the four since he spent most time at the 3, so maybe those increase. In any case, he’s not a good rebounder, but when you actually look at it, he’s exactly on par with our status quo.
